Nice work Stoggie!  Glad to hear that you made it through the surf unscathed.

Mind sharing the special halibut rigging?

Nothing special, just experimenting with the standard three way swivel, two hook and a weight set up to slide.

Just luck that i happened to wake one up down there.

No Baton beating, I just use the back side of my gaff. It works very well, large force on a small surface area equals split skull.

He didn't give me any trouble on the way in. Just slapped him, put him on the stringer and into the bag.

BTW he was a tasty bugger, got a lot of WAF points for catching a hali in less than an hour and back home to do the honey do's

Stoggie:

Advanced kayak fishing techniques include having a comfortable sleeping space in your vehicle.  On "early catch" days like that, it is incumbent on you to take a nap before returning home.  Just be sure to have ice on hand to protect your catch.

This information is helpful and can only come from years of experience.

This Newby will follow the Nap Protocol in the future. However, additional WAF points after two four day weekends and a lot of fishing will come in handy next time "I wanna go out and play".

By the way I used your technique and rigging you taught me on our first outing.

Thanks for that.

Ernie

Just used a frozen squid on the typical two hook setup and a 6 oz. drop weight about 2 feet in front.

Kept the original post low key, I'm tired of the lurkers and paparazzi getting to our spots without playing nice with the others.

Share and share alike....

pm me for the down and dirty, but there is not much else to tell, simple paddle to the kelp, drop a popsickle, catch 'but, go home.

I will say it was not the experience I thought it would be, halibut don't put up much fight till they get to the surface. If you net them be sure to put the net in front of them not coming behind them. my guy freaked out and swam right into the net.

After the measurement to verify size, three good smacks on the head with my gaff and he was in the bag. Not much excitement, in fact Porky was a few yards away and didn't even know I was hooked up till I had him verify my catch.

I kinda snuck out there and back. I intended to say hello to some of the yaks out there in the kelp (musta been a dozen of them), but wanted to get my catch back home and cleaned asap and I was a little excited as it was my first halibut.

Let me know when you are ready to hit it again. I'm up for another one.

That just means you did the job right! :smt002 you obviously didnt horse that fish, or "pump" it, because if you do they will wake up earlier and become a handful in a hurry.

Yup, I can verify that forsure, I had no idea all this was going on while I was skunked! I sure love how QUIET kayak fishing is, good stuff isnt it!!!

After we verified Stoogies catch, we spoke a few words then drifted apart, I heard some halibut clubbing going down in the distance (great sound), and that was that, bagged and tagged! Next time I turned around you had paddled out of site!
