Bill... that looks like a lot of fun... might have to look into doing some of that... love that kind of stuff.  Nothing like catching fish with equipment you built yourself... very satisfying... not to mention cost effective given the price of fish traps and fat baits these days.

Billy...you'd be proud to know that one of your students successfully made his first mold = Joe / Skyboy  :smt038 I think his next mold will be a human skull  :smt011...just another to add to his collection at his "House of Death".  :smt119  (I was invited to dinner there last night and I was freaked out by all the animal heads staring at me as I stuffed my face with wild bore and catfish over rice)

...piece of advise to everyone....don't get joe pissed off or you might find yourself to be a permanent resident at his trophy wall  :smt010

PS = great grub by the way, Joe and Jennifer - thanks for having me over for dinner....I'll be back tonight...tomorrow night...... :smt003

Bill,

I've been very close to ordering supplies for pouring my own plastics.  Maybe I'll hold off for a real lesson and/or your column.

A few questions though...

1.) Where do you buy your supplies?
2.) For making your own molds, what are you using?  It doesn't look like you used simple plaster of paris like I was planning on.
3.) You look like your pouring plastic from a pyrex measuring cup, did you microwave the plastic?  I thought you needed a heating pad and metal pot.

I'm really looking forward to the article.

Thanks,
Brian

I can answer those pretty quickly.

1. Plastisol - Del-Mart - http://del-mart.com/store/index.php?cPath=33&osCsid=907f3bffefd771ce2093e485f401c04e

You want the "tube" plastic, tough stuff Del also sell colors

More Colors - http://www.lurecraft.com

Glitter - SenkoSam is the man! - http://senkosam.tripod.com/

2. Molds I prototype with Durhams water putty, dirt cheap and easy to use. Mix to a pancake batter consistency, pour and let harden, bake 200 degrees for about 4-8 hours, coat with 2 part epoxy like devcon 2 ton. The blue molds you see are RTV silicon, much easier to use and more durable then the durhams but RTV is expensive so I only use it for baits I know I am going to make a lot of.

Make sure you superglue your masters to the bottom of the pan or they will float and be worthless.

3. Microwave in Pyrex is the way I go, it is a lot quicker than the pan method. You have to experiment though. Microwave in 30 second intervals until you get the time down.

Where do you get your RTV silicone?  I could use that with lead as well.

Tap Plastics has it but it is rather expensive. $100 per pound for the RTV and catalyst. Smooth-on rubber has a million different types and seems to be less expensive. I have not ordered from them yet though.
