A friend told me some friends of hers had a wedding party at Stinson Beach last weekend, when suddenly they notice a LOT of big sharks in the water.  They counted 8 sharks in a feeding frenzy on two huge bull elephant seals.  It sounds like an amazing sight considering it was just 150 yards offshore.  She said everyone was just sitting around the beach watching this amazing scene of nature.  She will go to the Marine Mammal Center, where she knows some people, and I will get more info.  Yikes. Just when I was thinking of doing a run out there for flatties...

Kind of early. I would like to see a reliable report. Not that your friend is making something up you understand. I would still entertain a drift at bolinas/ stinson though.Pretty remote of getting attacked.

Mu wa ha ha!!! Scallen, what about the rule of thumb....months without "R's" should be OK. Thats what I was going on when stuffing my crab traps with tuna bellies on Wednesday :smt005. Of course i had the ol Shark Shield fully charged and deployed. Still, just because you have airbags dosnt mean you should go driving into walls :smt044 :smt044.
the fact that there were no beach closures, or media coverage does not surprise me. It all depends on who sees the incident. Ill bet there are way more sightings there than beach closures/media frenzies. if you could get an honest survey of all the local surfers at stinson/bolinas, i bet youd get reports of far more incidents than there are beach closures. No surfer want the authorities telling them they cant go out for a sesh!
BTW possibly these posts should  be under the official GWS thread?...

Sent the sharks to monterey to feed for a week or two. Lots of seals and none of them look like they are hurting for food  :smt003

I did confirm the story.  (I should actually confirm twice before posting something this hairy.)  Yes, the behavior sure sounds more like orcas.  But she said it was right off Seadrift and plenty of people saw it.  Now she says her friends saw one elephant seal and four sharks.  Apparently elephant seals have bright red blood (sorry) and everyone on the beach was pretty amazed by that.

The source is an ex-girlfriend, I gotta admit.  It is a friend of a friend.  Take it as you will.  But it is not the kind of story she would make up.  This was out of the blue.

I still want to go halibut fishing at Stinson. I love Stinson.  But I am going to wait a couple weeks.

Get some pictures from your ex-girlfriend's friend's aunt's maid .. or who ever it was at the scene.  If they this feeding frenzy really happened I would think that someone attending a beach wedding would have had a camera and would have taken some photos.

This thread is pretty interesting. Why is everyone so keen not to believe it? if Pete hadn't posted this would anyone think there weren't sharks at Stinson?

He was clear about the "twice removed" nature of his source from the beginning, but just because it didn't make the media or no-one he knows took a picture doesn't make it any less credible to me (although the fact that it came from someone who once thought it sensible to date Pete does make me worry a bit).

Shark encounters happen all the time without making it into the "news"papers; http://www.sharkresearchcommittee.com/pacific_coast_shark_news.htm

anytime someone says there was a shark at stinson i find it very credible because they are just known to be there. i wouldnt go swimming there any day of the year because of it.

usually when you hear of a shark sighting its at stinson of all places in the bay area.

they must like that beach a lot.
