EDIT 05/28

we're fishing Albion instead, meet at 6.30am. The WX is GREAT!

Man, you can tell RF season is open now; I had to scroll back three pages for this thread!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Northern Boy Farewell Tour moves on to the Mendocino Coast during the weekend of May 29-31. We'll be staying in Mendocino and plan to fish Elk on Saturday May 30th, maybe also on the 29th. And the 31st.

If the Wx is bad we'll try somewhere a little more protected.

All company welcome.

I'm moving back home (UK) because......it's time. I have to come back from time to time so i'll be filling inboxes with pms asking for loaner yaks!

Elk is ~30 minutes south of Mendocino. Although we're staying in Mendocino we're not absolutely set on Elk so if anyones got any better ideas lets hear 'em.

Hello northern Boy,  my dive parnter Keith and I have been haunting mendo headlands area our last 3 dives...got my very 1st ab there back in 06 Great area as Mendohead will attest :smt004

I've yet to fish Elk in my yak...After watching yak after yak after yak come puffing up "Cardiac Hill" in 06 I was very impressed with everyones endurance!!! my knees/back/shoulders might not make it :smt010 I'm a simi-old-young busted up timber faller :smt003 need to hire me some of those young little Sherpa's running around :smt003

My dive partner Keith is going to be getting acquainted with the "Big Blue" for his first time tomorrow 5/22 @ Russian gulch. I've read some earlier posts and think the area will offer us a fun start...some one mentioned scenic caves :smt001

I would enjoy hooking up with you one of those days in the mendo area :smt001

tight lines...

Skipper Phil. I would love to join you on this one but, my wife's best friends parents are having their 50th wedding anniversary on the same
day. I am sure that I will still see you before you leave for the UK. BTW,
when ever you come for visit back, you can always use my T13 as a
loner. And some gears too. Ah heck, you and your wife can even stay at
my house. You guys are like family to me.

Awwww heck Jed, you're gonna make an uptight British guy blush here. Thanks for the offer, I'll be back once in a while for work so I may well be taking you up on it!

I hope you will have some decent fishing in the UK.  My wife read some of your post and always wanted to go up north for mushrooms.  Oh well.  Good luck.

The weather forecast looks not too good.  I was out last Monday from Albion and it was pretty sloppy.  We caught fish though when we weren't busy being queasy.

Albion is an easy in n out for a kayak (there is a fee to the very helpful & congenial campground managers.)  The cove is usually pretty calm even in nasty NW seas.  Shallow water and the sand bar across the mouth are not really a problem for yaks even at low low tides.

The better fishing in my experience is to the south (where you usually have to fight both current and wind to get back in.)  Salmon Creek to Navarro is better than Albion to S Ck, but both are good to excellent at times.

I would be careful of the Elk landing in bad weather unless you are a very experienced surf yaker.  It can be pretty tumbly.

Happy trails...

If the weather is not cooperating you might give Van Damme a shot to the north, it is fairly protected and is an easy launch and landing.

Albion and Van Damme are also much closer to Mendocino Village than Elk.  You might want to just either stay in Elk, or fish closer to Mendocino.  I think Albion is actually a good choice if you are set on staying in Mendocino.  I have also heard the best fishing is to the south..

Hi NB:

I would go NW and not run the risk of not being able
to make any headway, trying to fight the Wind and Currents. It's get Bloodly
nasty in a hurry along the Mendo. Coast and, no one to help out in time!
I lived in Albion for Eight Years and, the RF has suffered in part becasue
of the "Live Fish Guys". Try the short cut in the middle of the N. Point and fish
the Windward side but, watch out for "Wash Rocks" and keep you Paddle in your Lap while fishing.
                                                                          Good Luck

Thanks for the info Ernie. The forecast this weekend is for light winds out of the south, tho' we'll make a last min decision on direction when we get there!
