I got the stainless hooks at Fishermans Warehous in Sacramento.  Only 5.99 a hook, I figured why try to make them!  They are sticky sharp too, I am really pleased with the hook quality.  I think they are the Mustad brand.

Matt,

Bring some rope so you can show me how to tie the turks head. I have 5 knockers and 3 gaffs (once I go get the hooks). Not sure I'll be able to whip up more but ya never know.

Good guide plus a template here

Very nice! I may have to upgrade my knocker. My wife just realized that the toilet plunger handle was missing!

How did you add the lead and secure it inside?  Was it hot poured into the knocker?  I'm just wondering what will prevent the lead from exiting the tip of the knocker when you apply the calming effects to the fish.

Very nice work Matt...   It's always fun to harvest fish with tools you've made yourself.  Looks like you have the turk's head knot down pat.  I have tied a couple of them but it took forever to get them looking decent.

FYI those Mustad hooks aren't stainless.  They're tinned steel like the mustad duratin saltwater fishing hooks.  I did corrosion tests with them when I was developing my gaffs and found them to corrode much faster than even the least of the stainless steels such as 304 when immersed in saltwater.

Thanks guys.  Sorry for the late reply, I just finished my last stint of training in Sacramento.  I am glad that is over.  It is hard to be away from home that long, 7 weeks over all.

To secure the lead, I just drill several holes at a 45 degree angle from the tip.  Once filled with hot lead, the slug is wider at the base than at the tip.  It holds it in great!  I do the same thing when pouring knife bolsters with pewter. You can always put a pin through the tip if you want to pour a straight lead insert too.  A little finish nail works great.

Thanks for the info on the hooks Kzreelrods.  The guy at fishermans warehouse told me they were stainless.  this was after waiting 20 min to get service  :smt011 I will check around to order some different ones for the next batch.

Yes I did turn them on my lathe and have been selling a few.  I am working on installing an airconditioner in the shop to make some more.  The 110 degree temps takes the intrest in going out to the shop to make more :smt001.  I go back to graveyards soon, so may turn some out on my days off.  I will post up as I make them, or hope to bring these and lures to the tourney to sell off.

I do love knots and rope work.  I am trying to teach myself needle hitching now.  The knots are easy to do, they just take a little time.

Thanks all!  Matt
