Short story  - skunked, cold, and wet  :smt012 but at least I got out on the water.

Longer version: Got to the launch around 7am to find a nearly empty parking lot...just me and a guy in a little Drifter.  Hit the water by 7:30 along with Drifter dude, who was wearing shorts!  Paddled out through the kelp, which I immediately decreed to be thicker than the bush on a 70's porn star; I paddled more than I peddled today.  Potholed here and there as I made my way west out of the cove, eventually stopping about a mile from the point.  I took a picture of one of the cool lures I picked up in Japan, figuring I'd probably lose it in the kelp and at least I'd have a photo of one of my $12 lures.

I almost did lose it too; after about 45 minutes my Corvalus decided to act goofy.  The gear didn't want to engage after I dropped the lure in 50 FOW.  Just before I decided to pull it up by hand the gears kicked in.  Switched to my other rod and kept fishing.

Around 8:30 I hear Mooch hailing NCKA'ers from his mansion on the hill, saying that he and Guitarzan were on their way.  By this time the wind had kicked up pretty good...combined with the largish swell it made for a rough, wet ride (I'll skip the 70's porn star reference here, although it's still applicable).  Mooch kept hailing me on the radio with "Pete, I can't see you, what color is your Hobie again?" and "Gee Ben, I guess Pete's too good to fish with us locals", so I pulled up my rig and started the long into-the-wind paddle to where they were fishing south of the cove.  I wasn't catching anything where I was anyway.

Mooch fishing blind:

Guitarzan & Mooch toughing it out:

The rest of the day went pretty much the same as the morning; potholing here and there without luck.  I had two good bites, neither stuck though, the 2nd one leaving teeth marks on my Fishtrap just to add insult to injury.  I also managed to pull a dumbass move, coming as close as I've ever come to dumping myself overboard...I'd wrapped a handful of kelp around the pedals of my Mirage drive in an attempt to stay in one place in the darn wind.  A big swell snuck up on me when I wasn't looking, taking up all of the slack in my kelp anchor; I suddenly felt the left side of my yak being pulled downward far enough for water to start rushing in.  I managed to keep my balance though, and the swell passed before the "Oh sh!t!!" I'd yelled quit echoing in my head.  :smt011 I found some kelp with more slack and continued not catching fish.

By 1pm I'd had enough of the rain, chop and wind & headed back to shore with Mooch.  Got everything loaded and decided to head home instead of taking Mooch up on his offer to join them for "lunch at the Playboy Mansion".  I heard that there weren't any Playmates there anyhow.  (Thanks for the invite though, Joel!)  Drove home with mixed feelings; I'd gotten totally skunked on my first outing of the year, but I'd also gotten a chance to fish with a couple of my NCKA brothers and I didn't have to do ANY work around the house!    :smt004 Maybe the fish will come next time...

The great thing is that even when it sucks, it's hard to beat. I'm envious even with the skunk, the chop and wind. Thanks for the pics and info!

Great Report

You can always tell a persons outlook on life when they write a great report about a slow day.

I did the kelp anchor and almost bit it a couple times myself, so just started tucking it under the leg so it would slip out when the swell came through.

No more tying it on.

Keep getting out there

Stoggie
