Hello all. :smt006... Ive just started to make my own Ab iron. I got A piece of aluminum bar that is 3/4 X 3/4 in dia, and around twelve inches long. I put about A five degree bend in one of the ends. I was curiouse if any of you have made one,and have any tips for the pry end.. Should I just gring it down? I understand there cant be any sharp edges so I have rounded them all down...I will post pic latter...I also know that it would be cheeper to buy one but thats no fun!...Andy

Yo, Andy Bro.  There are specific regs (in the DFG booklet) for dimensions - I think 3/4" may be too narrow.  You should check it out.  I don't want you gettin' popped at GS3!

Most homemade ab irons are made from leaf springs.
DEFINITELY check the DFG regs for dimensions.

Just happen to have the reg book in front of me

...Abalone irons must be less the 36 inches long, straight or with a curve having a radius of not less then 18 inches, and must not be less then 3/4 inch wide not less then 1/16 inch thick. All edges must be rounded and free of sharp edges.

Hi Andy.
If you do grind on aluminum, DO NOT use a bench grinder. The aluminum will build up in the wheel and act as a wedge and frag the wheel, which is spinning at 2000-3000 rpm. I saw a guy having reconstruction surgery on most of his face from a grinding wheel accident.  :smt009  Not to be a downer just a little tip. Cant wait to see the pics.

Shut up, Art - I wanna get him on video bending that puppy on a Shelter Cove pot-roast!   :smt005

JK, Andy - I totally respect the fact that you're making your own iron.  I wanted to warn you that I've bent some 1.5" wide aluminum irons on big abs in the past, but I didn't want to burst your creative bubble.  Well, Art handled that little nastyness!   :smt002

Bring your custom job, Bro.  If you bend it I've got a replacement for you to have.   :smt001

Back in the "old day" when I was rock picking for Ab, I made some Alum Ab bars varies from 12" to 24" in length (1.5" wide and 1/4" thick with one end taper to 1/16" in complying with the regulation) and they seem to work fine but never pop a 10"+ ab with it so dunno if they will bend or not for a big Ab  :smt002

Made mine about 20 yrs ago, still using it, started with 1" flat bar 1/4" thick, filed "not ground" a taper into it stopped at 1/16", bent to exactly an 18" radius,  it's cold steel which means it has a full protective coating of rust. I've "lost" it twice spent allot of time to find it, so I painted it bright yellow. it's ugly but effective, never approached a 10 with it, maybe a bit short for that, still hope to find out some day. It's been fondled by many a warden over the years with out a problem. pics later, I'm at work right now,

"fondled by many a warden"  hehe, I like that.   :smt003  That's the kind of ab iron I know very well from knowing people with such treasures.  Hold onto that thing, Dale, and let me get it on video.  I'm sure it'll pull a 10 just fine.   :smt001
