I am looking for a kayak to get the family into the sport.  Would be great if it could sit 3 with some comfort.   I have a Tarpon 140T, but it is a bit tight.   I am thinking of a Cobra Triple, but am open to suggestions.

How big are the 3 you are talking about?

Ideally the boat could handle full sized people front and back and a smaller 100#'er in the middle.   If i cut his food rations, i think i can keep my 9 year old under 100 #'s for a while.   :smt005

Look for a Ocean Kayak Aegean if you can find one cheap.  I used mine as a single in Hawaii, but I let two large friends use it (600lbs) plus gear and I was really impressed with how it floated.  They just about sunk my cobra tandem.

Thanks, Andy.   I am looking around for one, but they seem hard to come by, apparently discontinued.

No problem.  Good luck with finding a boat.  I picked up an old three man ocean I thing for a 100 dollars and I've seen the aegean for three hundred use a couple of times.

I have the triple and it is a barge to paddle. It has much more room than any of the other big kayaks. We have used it on the bay with two 200 lb guys, a full size ice chest and a milk crate. We have used it at the lakes with my wife, two daughters and a 60 lb dog. A few weeks ago we used it in rough water and wind on the coast with two 200 lb guys and all of our dive/ab gear. It's is truly huge in both the good and bad ways.

Has anyone paddled a Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5 tandem, Ultimate 16, or Magic 14.5 tandem?

I'm considering the same thing to find a better platform for bringing my 4-year old out on lakes, eventually the youngest one too in a couple years.

These look like pretty decent family boats, comfortable and stable, and the 14.5 versions can be converted to singles as well.

Thoughts and experiences on these?

I have to comment here, the OK Aegean is easily the WORST paddling kayak I have ever experienced. This is after paddling it both solo and with another person onboard. Couldn't keep it straight to save my life. Seriously, do not buy an Aegean. Ever.

If I see any deals I'll let you know.  Like I said my friend and his wife way 600 pounds plus gear and had no problem with the aegean.  I also used it buy myself in Kona for a year and loved it.
