My GFs sister lives in Cayucos, a couple miles north there are a couple of nice launches (Cayucos Pt) into a large kelp area. This area is sort of outta the way if better fishing could be had getting there but if I'm staying a mile away what the heck. Any body have any info on fishing/spearing in that area?

Then a few miles south of Morro Bay is the Montana de Oro state park, also has what looks like an easy protected launch, and probably some good fishing nearby, info on that would also be appreciated.

My son was just accepted to Cal Poly SLO, so I may "visit" him from time to time.

The best thing to do would be to launch from cambria but there is a pretty good launch and some decent fish in cayucos.

Thanks for the tip, where do you launch in Cambria? We went thru town and saw a coastal access sign but it was time to go home so I didn't investigate.

I think it's called leftingwell.  The fishing is really good there.  It's at the north end of Moonstone drive before the parking lot.  It's hard to miss.

i think there is also a doable launch at william randolph hearst state park.  there is a pier there and a decent size parking lot.  if i remember the area properly there is quite a bit of kelp and some rocky outcroppings out there.

Thanks Dale.  I caught those in Cambria.  You can launch from the beach at Hearst but I would really recommend Cambria having fished both.  Last time I was there Dan Silveira came in just before I did from spearing off a yak.  His catch was nothing short of unreal.  He had tons of giant rubber lips, 25 pound sheepshead, and big lings and rock fish.  I was really impressed with his catch.  Big chartreuse swimbait with a little blue and green on top caught all the big lings last year for me.
