A question for folks who wear a knife while diving. Where on your person do you wear it, what kind of knife and your thoughts on dive knives in general. Have noticed some pics of divers with knives mounted on a plate on a Picasso wetsuit. How is that sheath mounted? Seems a good location as it is accessible to both hands.

Hey SRJ, i would never free-dive with a knife because it will most-likely be the item that gets tangled in the kelp and kills you. my dive buddy lives in forrestville(the good life). he is an excellent diver and is 45yrs old. His name is amir. do you know him?

I wear it on my belt.  But I've worn in on the inside of my lower leg as well as my upper arm.  The only problem with wearing it on the upper arm is securing the sheath because you're doing it with one hand.

I know a diver that wears his knife on his chest.  He uses webbing (like the nylon weghtbelt).  What he does is double over the webbing and sewing it so it forms a pocket for sheath.  He then glues the sheath onto the front of his suit.

I feel a knife is more useful than the danger it could pose.

If you wear it on your arm then you can only reach it with one arm.
Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

That's true, but there aren't many instances where your "free" arm is made immobile.  Even if it's that arm that is entangled, you can pull yourself to a position where the hand can get to the knife on the other arm.

I've always worn one on my inside leg since I started diving around here in 1983 (says that on my cert card).  I always thought I should have one to protect me from getting tangled in fishing line, but I've only ever used it to gut fish on the beach.  I get cheap ones, cause it seems like I always lose them by banging my leg on something.   The chest deal seems cool.  I might try that.

I wear two.  I wear a larger blade strapped on the inner calf, and a smaller knife which I also use for braining fish. Haven't had any serious tangle issues or catching kelp although the calf mount seems to get minor hang ups occasionaly.  I often see fishing line usually in shallower areas and find a knife to be a good thing to have on ones person while diving.  Omer mini laser is what i wear on my arm.. omer good

I have warn it on the inside of my left calf.  It does get tangled up in kelp a lot I quit wearing it last year.  Started using fins with foot pockets and the only thing that picks up a strand of kelp is my snorkel now. One of the people I dove with last year keeps his on his calf but cut the leg off an old wetsuit large enough to cover the knife.  It keeps the knife against his leg so it does not get caught and all he needs to do is slide his fingres down his leg to get to the knife.  Besides if you worry about getting tangled in kelp you have a pair of custom kelp cutters with you all the time.  Just grab the stalk and bight down on it and bend it will snap in a split sesond.
