I want to try at Omars. That little surf spot right after portuguese beach. You know where the creek comes to the beach right before Duncans landing? I ve got my gear in the truck at work in Petaluma. I will leave at 4:30pm. If Omars looks crappy we will go to Shell

Wow...  I really don't know what to say in response to that.  I'm sorry if I offended you, Craig.

Although I am not refering to abs...when it comes to specific rockfish locations, I will not divulge that kind of info on the net (that's my choice). But I will GLADLY give you a ride to the spot and share it with you....so long as you treat it with the same respect I do.

I think this is the general consensus on this thread. We are both conservationists AND harvesters. But the internet has a way of misrepresenting our intentions. We want to revel in our accomplishments with friends, yet at the same time protecting our (our as in we as in everybody) preciously limited resources.

Sorry to bring this thread back to the top. But as I read everybody's comments, I can't help but feel like we're all arguing for the same thing.

The problem is swearing someone to a secret and hoping they will keep it. So far in 52 years i trust only two people with keeping a secret.
There was once a paradise spot around ft bragg that was know to only a few. easy shore dive big abs. Then someone showed a person  with a big mouth and an ego that needed to be strocked and within a few years the area looks like a parking lot.
Same thing with a fishing spot where i would take kids fishing for carp. Showed a really nice guy how do catch them and he gives them away to a lady who eats them. Next thing i know her relatives and friends are linned up shoulder to shoulder harvesting all the carp they can..no room for the kids to get near the water........Never again.

I may be thrown off the stage here for suggesting this, but the more I eat abalone, the less impressed I am with it.  I'd much rather eat fish.  Personally, I think abalone gets a lot of hype only because it's relatively rare.  You can't buy it.

I'd much rather eat a nice Vermilion rockfish.

I haven't gotten a whole lot of 10" abs.  I would think the muscle fiber on the bigger abs would be tougher.  On the "button" where it attaches to the shell, I've seen (after cutting) the tough white lines like you would find in an old Daikon.  I usually eat the button raw.

I've been following this thread and the concerns are very familiar for divers/spearfishermen.  Here's what I wrote on another board:

I don't believe in publicly reporting on any spots. Even though this website has taught much to many, I believe our sport should still be conducted by the mentoring method. A guy can read all they want about gear, breath-hold...etc but they really need a mentor to go diving with to teach all the intangibles. I do take people to "my" kelpbed, but I usually take some time to read that person's posts, then contact people that know that person to get more info on them before I invite that person to dive with me. I want to know that I am introducing a steward to a special place.

That was written about the kelpbeds of Southern California, but I thought of another reason not to just publicly post spots for NorCal.  The spots where big abs are found could be hazardous and would probably be best if a visitor dives it with someone with local (water) knowledge.

I think that we often forget about who the whole audience of a website is.....

is it your neighbor, a guy from work or a poacher, probably all, we don't have a filter.

Share with your friends and brothers, but I wouldn't put a commercial on TV ... and not expect company.
