I need some input from you Techi Types Thanks.

Are you also looking for antivirus software? I'm using the free version of AVG, made by Grisoft.

Here's a free spyware program that was listed at www.kimcomando.com

SpywareBlaster is an effective anti-spyware tool. Unlike most anti-spyware programs, it does not scan the hard drive for spyware. Its strategy instead is to prevent modifications of your files and settings. For example, it can block browser toolbars from installing themselves.

SpywareBlaster can be used to prevent changes to Windows' HOSTS file. It also has a System Snapshot feature similar to Windows' System Restore. SpywareBlaster will report any changes to your system since the last snapshot.

One more...

This free program finds spyware and adware. These are little programs that advertising companies place on our computers. Adware feeds us ads; spyware reports back on our browsing habits.

These programs invade your privacy. And they will slow your machine. So it's a good idea to clean them out.

Lavasoft's Ad-Aware is a good program. You should use it in conjunction with other anti-spyware programs. That way, you've got all your bases covered.

How often should you run Ad-Aware? I run my anti-spyware software a few times a week.

Thanks,

I've used avg free version for a couple years, then came a notification that I needed to buy the upgrade because the Free version would not be available, which I did, for 2 computers...

my wife did not like it, so she uninstalled it and is still using the free version with no problems.... :smt012

My problem now is my lap top is slowing down and becoming quite troublesome in having to use the
" Go Back " button to " Wake Things up "...  are you saying the lavasoftusa will help with this?

 Thanks

A couple things to note on AVG. It is very CPU intensive and will bog your machine down but it does work very well. I always run scan at night so I don't have to worry about it.

If you are a broadband customer that uses the free McAfee AntiVirus software, try running the free AVG software. You may be shocked at what AVG finds that McAfee did not.

And you don't have to pay an annual fee to continue getting the updated virus definitions.

I got the notification too. But all I did was snag the new version of the free program. Uninstalled the old program but retaining all settings and then installing the new. Acted up a little bit until I remembered to restart the computer. Normally version upgrades are done automatically unless there is a major version change, like from version 7 to 8.

I use a combination of AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) along with Norton Avti-Virus.  I have had no serious problems with my computer in years.  Other than the fact that it's old, slow, and the CPU is probably ready to bite the dust, that is.  :smt012

Another one that I've had good luck is Malwarebyte's (another freebie).  When combined w/ Spybot, they will root out most anything.

Removers are fine, but ones that actually block at time of install are much MUCH more effective.

I use Acronis Privacy Expert (http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/privacyexpert/) which has ELIMINATED all threats of this kind.  You would be amazed at the number of *free* products out there that contain spy/adware in them.

This program will let you know as you install some free software that it contains spyware and allow you to stop the installation, like a firewall program does.

My computer runs AVG and it makes it very much slower, particularly when you boot up and log in, it takes several minutes to load everything.  I also use zonealarm for a firewall.  IMO the firewall is the most important thing, most viruses and malware try to phone home and the firewall will stop them and let you know you've got cooties.

I installed avira on my wife's laptop, and I think it's faster than AVG and is better rated among free virus scanners.

Anybody have advice on a Good program to help clean up a Lap top and make it run faster...

I guess my AVG is not built for that and my Lap top seems to be getting more tired by the second...

 Thanks
