I'm shopping for a new FF/GPS.

Looking for Opinions

There's a variety of choices out there and I'm OK choosing my own up to a point.

My question is about transducer cone angle, I know the dfference between a 20 and a 60,  but only have experience with a 60.

My current preference is to get a dual beam where you can look at either or both at the same time. Add GPS, maps, and color and it's getting a little pricey but still doable. I like knowing where I'm at and what's under me even if it doesn't help my fishing.

Anybody have experience with 20/60/dual usage?  Which do you prefer?

My fishing takes me from 5ft in SP bay to 120+ for ocean.  Bottoms from mud to rocks and kelp.

Any help would be appreciated

I just installed Hummingbird's 717 on my Outback.  It has the 20/60 beam on it and it's expandable to GPS and other upgrades.  I paid $179.00 via Amazon.  I haven't put it on the water yet, maybe I'll go today?  I'll keep you posted on the results.

There isn't much difference in price, and you will use them both.

Low freq/wide angle is for salt water, or deep water, seeing thru thermoclines, seeing exactly what depth your downrigger is working at, watching your jig work and watching fish HIT your jig in 60 FOW

High freq/ narrow cone angles are for shallow fresh water fishing, greater detail, more image seperation, more bottom definition. High Freq signal is absorbed by salt water or deep water, otherwise most of us would use it all the time.

By the sounds of it you are looking at Hummingbird products, which typically use 83 degree/200 degree, good for all around everything.

My suggestion- get a color screen, even if it means buying a smaller screen. You will never go back to greyscale again.
