I've always used spinning rod's & reels when trolling, but now that I have a few bait caster reels, and only a few BC rods, (Many spin rods) What do you all perfer to use when trolling?  I'm going to guess that the bait caster is top choice.  Last season, I experienced line twist real bad on my bass rod (spin reel)  so much so I had to remove almost half the line from the spool while on the water ( At Clear lake) I think the line was loaded on the spool wrong.
I think line twist is not present on bait casters, but I have very limited experience using BC reels.
I'm planning to use my brand new Abu C-3 and Diawa sc17(line counter BC) reels this weekend for trolling, both are on 6'6" BC rods.

Just courious.

Yep I use BC for trolling.

1. no/minimal line twist
2. way simpler to deploy.

Often times you can engage the clicker and free spool the reel. The clicker will give you just enough drag to let the line out in a controlled manner. I also like BC for jigging. Actually, I prefer them for just about all fishing except for casting real light lures. I also think I am a bit more accurate with spinning gear. But as I use BC's more that seems to becoming less of an issue

I'm certainly not an authority on the subject but I have been trolling for trout and striper for a couple of years.  I find the bait casting reels to be much better because the line twist you mentioned is not an issue with them.  I will occasionally troll with a spinning reel and every time I do, I end up with a twisted mess.  I have also tried using a high quality ball bearing swivel at the attachment point for the lure, but it seems to negatively effect the action of the lure and the line twist still seems to be a problem.  I troll various Rapalas and rattle traps with the bait casting rig without any line twist problems.

I use BC's most of the time because they have better drag system and no line twist issue.

I troll with both because that is what I have. But, I only use Rapalas on the spinning rod to avoid line twist.

I generally use spinners for trolling...  but like Jay I am only trolling Rapalas.

One thing that helps tremendously is to let all your line out with nothing on it...  all of it...  while you're paddling, to let it untwist.  I do that whenever I spool up with fresh line.

For some reason I still get nasty line twist tossing senko's, though...  But trolling not so much.

I've that in the past, and it never seemed to help.  Maybe the line (then) was too far gone.  Last time I had the line twist loops were spooling off the reel and jammin up in the guides!  :smt013 really annoying.  This was with brand new line I had a place in SJ load on the spool. (Not FW) I suspect it was loaded on incorrectly.
As mentioned I'll be trying my new reels at Del Valle this weekend. Don't get me wrong, I've been trolling since 1987 when I got my 12' alum. boat.  I've just used spinning reels all along.

For stripers, etc-- i exclusively use my spinning rod for trolling...never had a line twist issue, no idea why maybe cause i'm trolling crank baits and jigs almost to the rule?

for salmon, halibut- i use my conventional/bc set up

I've been trying #8 braid on a spinning reel (well, also a BC) for trolling and it seems to do a great job of not getting all looped up.  I've been worried that it's too visible though, so I'm going to add like 10ft of mono to the end to see if I get more strikes.

I troll w/ 8lb braid on both my baitcaster and spinning rod, but I use 4' of 4lb or 6lb flouro leader. I've never done otherwise, so i can't give you a comparison, but I can say I am catching trout nearly every time I go.  :smt003

I'd haven't trolled yet on my yak, but as far as trolling for stripers on PB I'd rigged up with a baitcast built-in line counter.  Baitcast reels that come with built-in line counters are pretty accurate in letting you know how much line you had out before you caught your fish or how much line you need to get your lure down to the strike zone.  Here is two brand names of these reels that I like...

What are you trolling for?  I generally troll for trout and would rather use casting than spinning.  My favorite feel is the Shimano Cardiff 100A (in the smallest size)
with a rod about 6'-6'6'' ultra fast tip
Everybody should have the opportunity to fish
