Early morning at The Loch

Well, I finally got a chance to go fishing the my old man this weekend. Loch Lomond is where he taught me how to fish as i was growing up. I caught my very first blue gill, trout and bass at this lake. I have a lot of fond memories of the loch and just love fishing here any chance I get, especially with my dad.

We got to the lake around 6:30am and rented a row boat. We bring our own trolling motor and batteries to cut down on rental costs. It's only $35 to rent a row boat all day. The weather started off overcast and pretty much stayed that way all day. The wind was light in the morning but picked up a bit as the day progressed. Water temp was 51 degrees with stained water clarity. We started off trolling towards the north end of the lake for holdovers with threaded nightcrawlers on a sliding sinker rig. I trolled kinda close to shore so I could also throw a swimbait near any bassy looking cover. After about 5 minutes I chuck my swimbait near some tullies and it got hammered. Unfortunately the coffee I drank hadn't quite set in yet and I didn't get a good hook set. I got the fish near the boat and it came unbuttoned. A damn shame cause it felt like a pretty good fish. My dad swears he got a good look at it and said it was a trout. Sure felt like a bass to me but I'll have to take his word for it as I really didn't even see the fish.

We trolled all the way to the north end without a bite so we headed back towards the dam. After a few minutes in the bay I got a good hit but it didn't stick but fortunately the fish came back for another swipe and this time he wasn't getting off. It was an awesome battle on my ultra light rod. The fish made multiple runs but we eventually got him in the net. My scale needs needs new batteries but he measured out at 17.5 inches. Definitely my biggest trout at Loch Lomond.

Something had taken a very recent chunk out of this fish. Look near the tail. He had an identical hole on the opposite side. Probably a hawk. This fish had beautiful pink meat and was very tasty with some garlic butter and dill. MMMmmmmmmm.

Unfortunately that was the only fish we caught. All in all it was a great day on the water with my dad. Can't wait to do it again soon.

Osprey more likely.  There is at least one nesting pair resident at the lake.  I've often heard their calls before I've seen them.  I think their nest is on the mountian above the docks up high.

Nice going Bro!.  Please follow Allen's advice.  As I start to monitor our fishing future together, I am starting to think the only place we will be allowed to fish is the Fishing Channel on TV.  I thought you were headed for Del Valle, but quality time with your Dad is not measurable (can't wait to go out with Aubrey).  I was thinking of buying a 9 pound Trout at the "Fish Lady" but thought this would dis-honor your great achievement of 8 pounds.  "Great To Know You As A Friend And Fishing Buddy".

Thanks guys.

Ya there is nothing like fishing with my dad. I wouldn't even be into fishing if it weren't for him.

Very nice report FF. The water level sure looks good compaired to what it was a couple months ago. Great to see you with your dad :thumright: If I'm on the water you will most likely see my son Joel too. He goes fishing with me wherever I go. The other twin will go if it's fresh water fishing. He doesn't handle the bay very well :smt078. Good luck on your next outing.

Thanks Ben. That is awesome that your sons like to fish with you. I can only hope that I am as lucky with my daughter when she gets old enough. She's almost 11 months and I'm already planning our first trip to Loch Lomond   :smt001

As we were renting our boat there was an older guy with his daughter also renting a boat. She couldn't have been older than 8-10 and she was so excited to get out with her Dad for some fishing. It's really fun to see that kind of excitement for fishing from the young ones. My wife says I can't take Aubrey out on a boat until she learns how to swim. I guess it's time for swimming lessons soon  :smt003
