Quote
Gerringong fisherman Darren Tierney was dragged 2km out to sea by a monster 158kg marlin off the coast of Gerroa on Wednesday....

So this guy's been out diving for the morning, and presumably has speared a few fish. A marlin swims by and he just can't help himself, so he jumps in the water and kills it. For what? Is there no such thing as excess?

I've seen soupfin sharks, leopard sharks, reef sharks, and huge batrays while diving, any of which would have put up a hell of a fight, but I see no point in shooting such a powerful fish for nothing more than a quick adrenaline rush.

Lame.

In case I'm not the only one who didn't know what "berley" was, it's basically chum:
Yesterday Mr Tierney had a plaster cast made of the marlin to mount on his wall, and gave the flesh to the Shellharbour Game Fishing Club for use as berley.

So he killed this incredible beast to turn it into chum.

Berley is great for attracting other fish to make more berley out of to catch more fish to make more berley out of to catch more fish to make more berley out of to.....hhmmmm, is this why it is called a renewable resource?

Kill'em all!  Pesky huge fish swimming around, freaking the kids out swimming by the beach.  Good for him.

If the fish was a 300# yellowfin tuna, would your responses be different.  Just curious ...

like something out of dumb and dumber  Too bad he didn't have a headcam on

It's almost enough to make a person want to work for packard(come to think of it I do :smt104 )

Now if it was a GW it'd be a different story

I was thinking it's too bad the landlord didn't see the lure that Marlin was trolling with.

A little bit, yes, because he might actually eat the tuna rather than just turn it into chum.

My biggest problem with it tho is, as Greg points out, he's basically making himself bait for sharks. How many hooked billfish get lost to sharks? Being attached to a bleeding dying marlin 2 miles out to sea is ballsy at best, suicidally stupid at worst. He had to have been close to winning a Darwin award.

I just see it as excessive. Even if he'd eaten it, it doesn't necessarily make it right. Guys like this are the reason there are people like the Packards.

He donated it to make "Berley".  I Googled it too, and that's just sick.   :smt011

If it was a big tuna it would be different because presumably it wouldn't be turned to burley but would actually be eaten by people, but it would still be a damn shame.

Spearfishermen are a unique breed.  They work very hard for their goals, are in much more potential danger than most of the rest of us recreators, and they're usually equipped with a strong sense of responsibility and respect for the resources.  I would attribute this to the fact that, if they're any good, they learn very quickly that their sport leads to the death of an animal immediately upon their pulling the trigger.  This guy appears to be trigger happy...
