I love fishing swimbaits and since i wok right by OP pier, i figured I could easily use the cast net for some shiners before going out.
i'm probably going out to oyster this saturday.  let me know how you do on the shiners since i may try to get some for bait myself.

"I start paddling and build up some speed, then I put the reel in free spool and thumb it so that it goes down in a controlled manner. If I'm in more than about 20' of water I may have to do this twice to get it to the bottom without tangling. Or, sometimes there is enough of a breeze to allow me to drop it while drifting."
Sounds like some Hobie denial to me.... :smt002 Hows that saying go? Work smarter not harder.... :smt005 :smt002

Hobie denial? Hobies are nice boats, but I like kayaks!  :smt110   :yak :smt044

Any of you guys just drift while working swimbaits or live bait?

Yup.  Both will work.  Good topic to bring up right about now...

How do you like to rig for butt trolling?  I  Wanna start thinking about this.

I've given this one a lot of thought myself.

Get a quick-release pants snap.  Paddle hard to build up speed.

Use your quick release, then gently ease your butt down into the water.  Try not to capsize.  When you slow down, just repeat the above.

When I used to fish the pier itself, we would catch tons of shiners by throwing the net by the pilings, should still work.

I prefer to drift live bait.

Worked great last year from the boat and kayak.

I do both, but keep in mind that the best halibut tides are the flatter tides with the least amount of current. If there is significant current I'll either stay home or drift live bait.

BTW, I agree with Rock Hopper about live bait being the most effective. I prefer it too, but early in the season it can be tough to come by smelt or anchovies. But you should be able to get some shiner perch.

I like the 3-way swivel with a 4inch dodger with either a halibut rig or an rsk. The dropper weight I like to use is a hairaiser because you never know. You could and can get a halibut on the hairaiser.
