I am in the market also and have been doing some research. Check out these reviews.http://www.boatus.com/reviews/power/vhf.asp They rate the Standard 460 as the best.
This place has pretty good prices http://www.brokenlegdave.com/Manufacture/Standard/HX270S.htm

I'm torn between the Standard 270 and the 460. I like the fact that you can use regular AA batteries in the 270 and I like the small size of the 460 and the lithium-ion batteries.
I have a Standard in my PB and it's operated flawless for 15yrs. :smt102

Thanks Mcfish,

I am also looking to buy a VHF and have decided on the StandardHorizon 460. Thanks for the link to Daves Marine. This price is as good as I have seen so far. I am selling my aluminum boat and merc for funds for the radio and other kayak rigging goodies.

I bought mine on Ebay, just compare it to the ones your looking for and bid less. I have a uniden alantis I bought for 48.00. Couldn't find it for less than $80 anywhere else.

I finally made the decision to buy a VHF radio and decided to buy the Standard Horizon 460 I need a compass also and decided to buy a Ritchie angler model  RA93. As luck would have it Daves marine as noted above is out of stock..  I guess we are never to old to get excited about a new toy. Then to find it is out of stock  :smt009

I just received my Uniden Voyager that I purchased off of ebaY. Very high quality goods at a very good price, I paid $145 for it and all the mail order joints were around $199. Even received overnight DHL for  a total shipping cost of $7.95. If you're looking for a serious piece of equipment that's built to last don't overlook the Voyager.

gotbaitgofish,

Did she order the ones from West Marine?
I was thinking about ordering a pair so my son and wife would each have one.

Look forward to your review.
