With all this rain we've been getting, and no calls to work (substitute teacher) I've been spending a lot of time pimping the yak for fishing and getting it ready for my first ocean trip at GS III. Since I don't have a nice dedicated angler yak like most of you, (Ocean Kayak Malibu II XL) I have had to get creative with rigging it.

After checking out many threads on how others have rigged their yaks, I decided to build a ghetto bar (I guess that's what they are called) out of PVC pipe and some stuff I found at the dollar store. Anyway, I finished it up this morning and I think it should work great. First of all, it can be mounted to the yak at two different positions (just forward of my feet) to accommodate solo or tandom use. I discovered that 1/2 inch PVC pipe fits nicely through Scotty's side/deck mounts side holes. The main bar fits through the scottys mounts on both sides of the yak, and is reinforced with a wood dowel rod inside the pipe. To keep the bar from sliding side to side (even though the fit is snug thru the Scotty's mounts) I used a T-joint on the outside of each mount (not glued) and held them to the main bar with a pin and clip set-up. To keep the bar from rolling forward or back I glued elbows to both ends of the T-joints and angled them inward to lay flat on the top of the yak. To take the bar off the yak, all I need to do is pull 2 pins, pull off the 2 outside T-joints, and slide the bar out of the Scottys mounts.

I used T-joints (threaded top) on the main bar for mounting the fish finder,VHF radio, compass, and camera mount. While at the dollar store I found a couple items that saved me some green. To mount the FF I found this plastic flag mast and holder, didn't use the mast but the holder worked great for the FF. It has a 3x4 inch flat section molded to a 1/2 inch pipe section that is 4 inches long. I attached the pipe section to a male threaded PVC end and attached the FF base to the 3x4 flat section. I also used the same flag holder set-up to make a mount for my VHF radio using velcro on the flat section and on the radio bag. The dollar store also had a mini camera tripod and the legs fit nicely into a piece of 3/4 inch PVC pipe, I glued a 1/2 inch threaded male end to this pipe and bingo , a camera mount. I found a 3 dollar navig. compass in the auto dept. at Wally World and mounted it to a T-joint as well.

I plan on adding a navig. lite and 2 beverage holders :smt002 to the end T-joint set-ups using the same methods. When all is complete my ghetto bar will accommodate a FF, VHF radio, camera, compass, navig. lite, and 2 beverage holders in any configuration I want. By the way the compass is not too close to anything metallic and works great. Waiting for the rain to stop to goop in my transducer.

 If I wasn't a computer illiterate I would post some pictures, but I don't know how :smt010
Can anyone help me with that?

See ya at Gimme Shelter III, Tad
