Hi.

I want to try camping along the north coast this summer and was wondering which campground, Van Damme or MacKerricher, you would recommend?

I would like to make two trips, one with wifey, kiddo to do the "family thing" and one with the guys from work for some hard core kayak fishing and ab diving. I don't dive, but some of my co-workers do and I like grilled rockfish and lingcod. Any info and opinions would be great~!

Thanks!

MacKerricker is hands down nicer than Van Damme as far as camping , bigger , more au natural campground . We drove through Van Damme to check it out and the Wife did not care for it at all and I could see why . The only plus I could see at Van Damme is ocean access that would be calmer than MacKerricker on any given day ! This time of the year you should not need ressies , drive through them both and check them out for yourself .

Russian Gulch.  It's just up the road from VD and has great paddling, yak-fishing and diving opportunities.  Plus great hiking trails and all that stuff.  On a flat day, the yak-caving from Russian is world class...very cool.

For fish, you can launch out of the totally protected bay and either head south to the mendo headlands or north up to Cabrillo pt.  It's all good and pretty protected stuff.
