Rainy day non-yak kelp greenling caught off legal, non mpa side of lovers point.Fishing from rocks with a ton of snags and a little wave overspray. Better than being a couch potato.

Way to make the best of it, calbear. That's a weird-looking greenie....almost resembles a giant kelpfish.
ps--I haven't fished Lovers since Sept 07 when they made the north side a reserve. But it's good to see somebody is fishing it.
Thanks for the report. What did you catch it on?

I caught it on asian market fresh shrimp w/ the head. It had been a while since I fished there as well. While I was leaving I saw some other guys fishing right on the point(I think right on the mpa borderline),and the wardens were posted a couple blocks down scoping with the binocs. I dont know what happened but probably they were tipped off by a local resident.Everyone with a cell phone is a warden/cop/chp these days. I usually launch from the cove when I go out for sand dabs and mackerel

Hey nice fish.  I was looking at those pics and it didn't look exactly like a greenling, esp. the tail fin and the head.  It looks like you got yourself a giant kelp fish.  The tail of the kelp greenling is more squared off and the head is more blunt.  While the head of the giant kelpfish is pretty sharp and the tail cuts in.  Check it out:

Good luck and tight lines.

I believe you're right, boss. Well, that makes this fish my first giant kelp rockfish. I thought it was an unusual/slightly unfamiliar shape when I caught it. Here are some previous kelp greenling catches.

That's a cool catch..how did that giant kelp fish taste?  I had a shot at a large one in Catalina Island but I missed it w/ the spear by 3 inches.
Good luck and tight lines.

I called it!

I could tell just by looking at the elongated dorsal. That is easily the biggest one I've seen around here. Wonder how they taste?

It was surprisingly tasty and filleted very nicely boneless. I marinated it in Lawrys sesame ginger 30 min marinade. I love that flavor.
