I have heard and read varying reports on the effectiveness of certain colors of fishing line for different areas. I am wondering if anyone likes the high visibility line or just prefers green or clear? I thought I would post this to debate to the gallery. What do you like and why for our Northern Cal. waters? Thanks Mike

They're all good!
If you do many kinds of fishing for different species you will end up with many spools of line. That number can even be broken down more into the various pound tests.
The majority of my bulk spools consist of HiVis Blue Stren, Maxima Green, and Maxima IGFA.
Then there's the braids. These are mostly for bass, white being a prefered color on my senko rod, green on my dropshot, topwater, etc. I topshot with flouro. I'm starting to use braids for the salt too.
The Blue Stren is for mostly for watching my drift when fishing steelies/salmon. The leaders will be Maxima. I also like it for when backtrolling plugs. You need to see where your stuff is!
The Maxima Green is an awesome all around line, but hard to see! I love it for my for my 4, 6, and 8 lb applications.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

I do the exact same thing with Hi-Vis yellow power pro and maxima topshot.  :smt002

I was a big fan of Berk. Solar XT for its high vis.  Otherwise, i thought it had too much memory.  But it sure was fun to see that bright green strand go straight down through into the big blue.  I caught my first salmon on 14 lb test Solar XT.

Maybe this is why i can't catch a fricken fish sometimes!!

I go with the PowerPro in green for EVERYTHING.....topshotting some mono to suit the occasion and fluro-carb for all leaders.

Am i supposed to be watching my line too? :smt011

Use hi vis a lot.  It greatly helps watching the line.  Like Juan I will add a clear leader if Im worried about spooking fish, but I  have caught all kinds of ff fish on straight hi vis.  I use Izor and it is easily the best line I have ever used...I love it.

Personally I've been very loyal to Maxima for almost all my fishing when it comes to monos. I also use the braids for a lot of applications, but hi vis has been something I've just started messing with. It has pluses and minuses as far as I can see. (pun intended  :smt002)

I've been experimenting with this idea a bit over the past year and I've put hi-vis yellow Sufix braid on several of my saltwater rigs. I also use flouro leaders with it. I like it so far, mainly for the visibility and line monitoring that everybody else mentioned. I haven't tried it yet for freshwater, but I don't know why it wouldn't work. I think my first freshwater experimenting will be with soft plastics, like Senkos, since keeping an eye on sometimes slack line is really important to detecting bites.

I remember being told by a southern California fisherman/writer (Dan Hernandez) that, if you're not fishing deep, you should not use clear line because fish that target prey on the surface can see reflections off the line.

keeping an eye on sometimes slack line is really important to detecting bites.

I use it for Senkos but not to see the bite. I rely on feel more than sight for the bite.

The reason I want to see the line is because depth is very important to me. Fishing in the right depth is key in catching fish. Watching the incident angle of the line allows me to estimate how deep I am fishing.

It also allows me to see if I am actually fishing the location I want to fish. Heavy current and wind can change the location of my bait off the intended target after I made the cast. We all know how important it is to be fishing where the fish is holding.

Fish can feel the line better than they can see it. In my opinion they can feel any line you put on your reel, except that the smaller diameter lines are not so threatening than the bigger diameter lines to them. I use a Maxima top shot not because I am afraid the fish can see the line but because I fish in areas with sharp rocks and I need some abrasion resistance in the first 10' or so.

For fresh water 6-12# class I use fluorocarbon main line. For 14-20# I use spiderwire invisibraid with or without a fluro leader.

For saltwater 20-25# I use fluoro or Izorline copolymer. For 30-50# I use spiderwire invisibraid or Izorline mono or spectra with a seaguar fluoro or maxima big game leader

I have not used the high vis fluoros/superlines but will probably try them on one of my bass rigs. I am not much of a bass angler so I need all the help I can get. :smt005

I use braid practically everywhere. I have caught a lot of trout of Lake Alpine on 30lb green power pro braid  :smt003. I have no problem with it on the Stanislaus River for stripers in the crystal clear water either. If I am bait fishing for trout or finesse fishing in lakes I use a 12lb mono line.

I have used the high vis line for perch fishing cause I like to be able to tell whether my line is under a wave, etc.

never had the guts to tie braid or hi-vis mono direct to a lure/bait, always used some sort of clear leader.

the braid that comes in metered colors is pretty cool for trolling or probably for bottom fishing when you don't have a line counter reel or sonar unit.
