I've been reading your posts for a few months now and love it. Bought a Malibu X-13 awhile back and today was the first day I took it fishing. Nobody ever accused me of being quick to move on something (the 1yr old and pregnant wife may have something to do with that)

I'm a novice fisherman, most experience from Mexico where they do everything for you. Decided to try Foster City mainly because it's close to home and I can always swim to shore if things get interesting. Didn't have any real hope of catching anything but just wanted to get things situated on the yak. I got on the water at about 11:30 trolling a Rapala. Stopped to cast a bit and realized casting reels and I don't get a long well, so after untangling a few rats nests I went back to trolling. After about 45 min I looked back and the line was not trailing behind the yak but off to the side...huh that's weird, then I noticed the rod tip going nuts. Pulled in my first Striper. Guys were coming out of there houses to watch. I think we were all a little shocked. Got it to the boat.

Thank you to everyone who suggested leashes for everything. I had stuff flying off the Yak in every direction while trying to get the hook out. I taped a ruler on my paddle but didn't think to put it in the water. I think it was about 21in. I released it figuring anything living in that water has to be toxic and I don't know what's legal to keep.

I'm fired up, been wanting to do this for about 3 years. Thanks for all the info you guys provide. It allows me to at least look like I know what I'm doing.

Congrats on the first yak fish. Furthermore, catching a striper this time of year is a challenge in itself.

Welcome to the club.

Great first report, Jaywo - and a catch and release no less.  Well done!
