I've been lurking here for two years now looking at pictures and waiting for the day that I had my own kayak. Well the wait is over. For my B-day my family chipped in on a Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT and I am excited. I've got the kayak, seat and paddle. I hope to meet up with some of you to get some pointers and have some fun.

Right on, baymaster - welcome aboard!  I paddled a Scrambler XT for quite a while and caught plenty of great fish from it.  I'll look forward to seeing your reports.   :smt001

BAymaster:

Ever fish all day from that pier and see bait working just outside of your casting range.  Wishing you could just be "over there?"

Well, now you can!!

Welcome to the mAdNEsS!!

If you've been paying attention to this board for a couple years, then I'm being redundant, but look up all the safety tips experienced  people have posted. Get a wetsuit and a good pfd and a vhf radio as minimal mandatory equipment.  Go out with one or more of us to start.  We are all ready to fish with you and welcome new fishing buddies, no kidding!

I wrote an article years ago that Bill is going to post here, basic safety, rigging and fishing tips  (all general stuff and a dated article, but can be helpful for the newbies.  Called the ABC's of kayak fishing.  Look for it. (Did you see the recent post on near tragic solo adventure at OAP?  That was my impetus for asking Bill to post that article.)

Right now, the Bay is the place to be for leopards and sturgeon.  My suggestion is go for leopards or even flounder 1st, and don't go alone.

You are in the right place, dude, welcome.....

ps for other lurkers, you don't need a yak to post here.  If you want  a yak and  start posting, my bet is you'll get one sooner rather than later.....

Allen

Welcome baymaster. You will love it here. I too came from PFIC. Congrats on your
new ride and hope to see you on the water soon. BTW, once you catch your
first fish on the yak, it's hard to go back.

Allen, maybe your article will be the impetus to start a "Safety Tips" heading on the forum so that tips and experiences in this vital area can be shared in a reliable and organized fashion.

Thanks for the warm welcome and advise fellas. I think I'll break her in at one of the local pay-n-play lakes or FC lagoon before I brave the bay. See yall on the water.

Baymaster, maybe the first fish from the yak will do it. If not, the first get-together with other yakers will. One way or the other, you WILL get caught.
Welcome.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Welcome Baymaster :smt006

Glad to see you broke the ice and posted. Your among a great bunch here. Best advise I can say is to take a paddling/safety course and make sure you learn to self rescue. Buddy up is best when going out if at all possible. My first yak fishing experience was with scallen on this board. Highly recommend going out with him. You'll have a great time and learn a lot. Great choice on the Ocean Scrambler XT :smt023.
