After getting tired of dino meat and some WSB (from ChuckE), my loving wife craved for her favorite surf perch. So off I went to my favorite spot in HMB. I got there a bit early (slack) and it was a little breezy. Casted and hiked for a few hours for about a mile por-nada. Just as I was starting to head back, (the magic "2 hours before"), the action begun. Overall score... I lost count! Okay, I kept 6 (good enough for traditional paksiw) and released at least 5 (I think). Nothing spectacular; but definitely a plus to my WAF account.  :smt057

Very nice perch TailWalk. I hear up north they are catching quite a bit of redtail
perch using 21\2" pumpkin grub on carolina rig set up.

RedTails, best surfperch IMO. Do you know where up north? I know Manchester Beach has a lot of Reds but I think DFG says 5 is bag limit. Not worth the drive.

Well done! Way to get them on a fly. I have to dig out my fly rod one of these days. Are those barred perch? If so they look just like reds that went blonde.

way to go Lee. I gotta get back into doing some perch fishing. Ya think I look good getting thrown from a kayak. Watch me in the surf-comedy in real action.  :smt003 I do get my share of perch too. Atleast they don't care much if you get nailed by a sneaker wave and ya join them for a swim!!

Nice work man, looks like a beautiful day for it,

They are indeed barred surf perch, the major difference from the red tails being, the, er, red tail. No size restriction on BSP tho'.

They are barred perch. Sorry for the image... no flash on my camera phone. I have not seen any reds south of Ocean Beach.

Been there, done that!

She's a happy camper.  :smt002

I use both. It depends on what they like to take. Since the sandcrab pattern is so expensive ($3 ea) I prefer to use grubs. I am almost out of the sandcrab pattern and may have to tie my own soon.

but the wind is usually onshore and I kind of suck at fly fishing.

The wind is always an issue. However, I found ways on casting my shooting head without snagging my ears. I would suggest no less than 8wt setup when the wind is blowing. The good thing is I always hook em no more than 50ft away.

Lucky you! Didn't you love it?

It sure was a workout... both arms and legs, but I love it. Reward from WAF... oh yeah!
