As it was Sunday, and I hadn't gotten out this weekend (GF and I went out motorcyling Saturday and crossed both the Dunbartona dn the SM/Hayward, and I thought to myself those "Dino-Chassers are out there somewhere," as flat as the water was Saturday).  I had chores to do Sunday, and GF wanted to go but caught up doing stuff around the house. So I grabbed the hobbie and a rod with a bass plug on it and went out to Foster City Rec center and tossed the boat in the water, and paddled practiced trolling which is something I have never done.  I didn't get any hits, but a Paramedic I know swears  Ray's and Stripers will come in, so I said what the hell.  GF and I have paddled out there for exercise adn I have seen plenty of fish jumping, but none bit today.  After paddling around I noticed the boat ramp by the dog park.  Next time I will put in there.   It is 1 minute from work and 5 minutes from the house so I might paddle troll and see what ever bites.  There is an entire Plastic flotilla back there, as people who have apartments back there  have kayaks and canoes all over the place.

Scouting new waters on possibly vague yet promising tips, with full knowledge that the possibilities are there for any of the true bay and delta species, so close to your home and work - this is special.  Work it, put in some time there and learn all you can about it.  Your local water may turn out to be a treasure that's only accessible by those who've learned the secrets of the timing and the skills of how to hookup when the opportunities are there.  Exciting prospect there.   :smt001

Thanks AbKing.  I remmeber years ago a buddy of mine used to fish this small pond just outside an airport, he used to score some major bass in it. Everyone thought it would be empty but he kept going and always came home with something.

I've been told there are very large land locked stripers and halibut in all of the canals in Foster City. They come in threw the bay intake and grow to large to get back out. I'f I had a yak I would try trolling a rattle-trap or any other crank bait that makes noise as the water in there can be quite merky. There is a pump station at the end of 3rd ave close to ware Mooch used to work and I have heard of people catching stripers using popers or bait on the inside.

That would not surprise me.  I took an EMS course next to one of the canals and one of the instructors who is outdoors more than he is in said he could see the fish in there every high tide.  I have seen some smaller 1-2 pound fish jumping all over there last summer.  I didn't see anything bigger, but where small fish venture, big fish are bound to lurk.

i think that most of those ponds, etc that open into the bay in one way or another have some fish in them...i've seen three really big striper carcasses in the wetlands thing at corte madera, and bel marin keys has plenty of stripers (did i say that out loud?)

My father-in-law passed on a pic from one of his hunting buddies who lives in Foster City. I believe he was practicing with a fly rod for an upcoming trip and get locked up with a decent sized striper (if memory serves me). I will try to track down the pic. I live in Burlingame and have thought about giving it a try.

Jaywo,

Let me know when you want to give it a try.  My GF's dad lives over in Burlingame.

hey, great report, Kevin.   I look at teh Foster City lagoon every day and seen schools of anchovies and huge bait busts, but shame on me for never even trying to fish it.     Time in my life is always too short, yet for some reason, i always find myself fishing at farther destinations.   IT would be great to have a home water that really kicks out some good fishing.
