i have trout fished in my kayak atleast 60 times and have usually been able to find the fish and what they want but at Sly park the other day i caught one fish that i feel was a fluke. What do you guys do to get to different depths? Normally i'll just keep changing paddling speeds until i hit a fish and then keep that speed. Are there more affective ways?  Thankfully in February i'm getting a downrigger for the kayak.  After going with my freind who has a downrigger on his kayak and i have to work 5 times harder finally convinced me to get one. : )
Everybody should have the opportunity to fish

Use a downrigger but replace the wire with 30# spectra and use a 1-3#downrigger weight. Search "downriggers" on this website for ideas.

Get some lead core trolling line. Count the colors as you let out the line. When you start catchung fish remember the # of colors out and bingo you are right back to the same depth. Make longer leaders and put split shot on the leader up by the swivelif you dont want to buy leadcore. I think the lead core is around 15 bucks if I remember correctly. Good luck.
