One method of staying out of the muck is to change the handle on the shovel to one off a field hoe which around 5 ft long. Then you can clam standing up. Also using a narrowed blade makes digging a little less strenuous. :smt004

My father would amaze me by never getting dirty. He would scout out a spot that had 4-5 necks showing and get them all! He would feel the clams with his shovel in the bottom of the hole and pick them up with it. 2-3 holes for a limit while I was struggling for 1/2 that.

Jeez. After looking at all the pics I think I have 'clam' envy. Maybe I should reply to all the 'enlargement' spam I get.

I have clammed for horsenecks a bunch of times and for me , this is just for me , I would rather go and buy some steamers and cook them in white wine and shallotts with butter and garlic. No more digging for a neck that looks like a horsecock. Anyway we used to put them in a ice cheast filled with fresh water and corneal and the clams woulkd flush themselves of sand ,pull the necks off slice the neck in half and pound like ab and deep fry the strips after being dredged inflour with spices. Thats the way to eat horsenecks. Some potatoes and ginger beer. Shit I may have just talked myself into doing it again after 20 years.

Call me cheap, but I was looking to avoid the $7 entrance and $2 launch fees at Lawson's Landing. I've done that over the years and am looking to try something new. Besides, the tide current looks good for riding with it each way.

My clamming equipment includes a hollow tube (size of a 5-gal bucket, but longer) and a fence post-hole digger. I've gotten clams without using the hollow tube. The tube just helps make it easier.

I've always wanted to try the clam gun method, but was never able to get a hold of a clam gun/pump. Will try to make my own this time.

Query:

Yu'know where the Johnson's Oyster Farm is, out at Point Reyes?
Can you did clams in those sloughs that come back into Point Reyes from the ocean?

Clam guns at sports authority, Novato. Just saw them today, dont know the price. Im an east-coaster too, 20 yrs ago, my favorite was clams casino. But after eating some of Shimmys ab/scallop fritters at bam, I have a new favorite.

that sounds like a plan.
watch out for the sea lions on the sand bar though.  they are very sensitive about strangers coming too close.

Ok, heres the deal: My wife LOVES clams, did i say she LOVES them?...
If I make a couple of clam guns, will they work for the clams there at tomales?  and how long should I make them?  the holes Mallibu_two showed looked at least 3 feet deep...

Thanks
maybe I'll make her weekend by running out there soon  :smt004

It looks like this Friday is the first day in weeks with a bona fide forecast of bad weather- -winds 20-30kts and a 70% chance of rain.

Thursday looks slightly better, plus the low tide is ealier (tho' not as low).

Whass the current plan folks?

Doh!.!.! If that's the case, I will not be out there, especially with the reputation of Tomales Bay and its winds.

Thanks for monitoring the forecast. I'll wait for a day with better conditions and repost.

In Tomales? I'd be up for some fishing in the morning and clamming in the pm if the wx co-operates.

The wx still looks like crap, but we'd still be game for going if there's a spot where we don't have to paddle to; are there any spots we can reach from the shore?
