I thought it would be better to have a separate thread for diet ideas, ect... ect... as not to Clog up

" The Competition "  Thread :fat

I wanted to start with a " Detox ", but all I know are Harsh things like Cilium Husk ect ect....

I came across an " Old School " detox remedy called "Master Cleanse"...

Here's a Link,  Guess it's been around a while and I wondered if anyone else has heard of this...

I know it's a advertisement, but it has the recipe for the " Limonade ",
met a guy at work that swears by it and he makes it himself...

and another link

Caution, I don't think it's for the Weak of Heart or a house with poor plumbling   :smt002

When you read the details in the detox link it basically looks like the cleanse comes more from the 1/2 to 1 gallon of fluid they want you to drink each day and that the ingredients just add some "cleansing" flavor. I imagine that if you drink that much water every day on top of your regular fluid intake you would get similar results.

I guess I'm kind of the "eat smaller portions and increase your activity" kind of guy. My plan is to use a food log to force myself to be conscious of what I am eating, so at the very least I'll hesitate before I jam a cookie in my mouth!

Also, I find if I have a fitness goal then I am far more likely to exercise and rethink what I'm about to eat. Along those lines my wife and I have signed up and paid our entry fee for the Bay to Breakers run in May. We did the run two years ago and we had a blast. The start is a bit crowded, but after the one and only hill on the course, it was pretty pleasant.

If anybody else would like to do this run, either with my wife and I, or on your own, it works out to being about 7 miles of reasonably flat jogging. When we did it, we didn't want to be fast, we just wanted to have a good time so it took us about an hour and 15 minutes (a little slower than 10 minutes/mile).

Here's the link for more info and the sign up: http://www.baytobreakers.com/main.html

I hear ya on moderation, and I have gone from Sloth to Ironman at 4 different times in my life,
( this one will be the hardest  :smt011 ),

But, I have never done a through detox and I think this would be beneficial. According to the person i talked to about it, the lemon/maple syrup and cyane have much to do with the detox.

I have some " Holistic " training in my past and sat through some detox lectures. It's pretty intense and gross. Definitely something that should be researched carefully before starting.

Everything has it's dangers,  when I worked in the City, I can remember at least 3 Codes at the Finish line via

 The Bay to Breakers... :smt002

But, your right, it is a fun run,

just as Clint Eastwood says playing Dirty Harry..

 " A Man's Gotsta know his Limitations... "  :glasses7:

Yep, the year we ran there was a guy who died at the finish line about 15 minutes after us. It's those kinds of stories that keep me motivated to actually train and make sure I can run 7 miles before I set out to do it. That and the $35 I would be out if I didn't run!  :smt044

I think most of those detox diets are along the 'poop more, eat less' line of thinking.  Often they'll have ingredients to make the 'poop more' part more, well, explosive.  But losing gut-load weight is purely temporary since once you start eating food again your innards will fill up again with stuff.

I find that a good way to diet is to cook all your food and banish 'easy' food from the home.  That way the motivation threshold to make food is higher because it'll take 10-20 minutes on the stove rather than 1-2 in the microwave.  Then make only as much as you need to eat.  That's what I did (with great success) before getting married.  It doesn't work so well with wife and kids though.

Detox is all the rage back home in the UK. I have never seen so much bad science and quackery, all preached by scammers wanting to make a quick buck out of peoples new years resolutions. Don't do it!

I'm with Jay. A lot of the stuff Adam wrote in the other post made sense to me as well. Eat less, do more.

I reiterate my support for the pedometer as a means of increasing ones activity levels.

i'm also gonna join soon, just havent got the pic yet.  but more meals - smaller portions is a good idea.

pack your own lunches to work and make them easy to snack on (HEALTHY snacks) throughout the day rather than a big meal all at once.  you will metabolize better.

i suck at exercise due to bad feet and knees (also since i leave home at 5am and dont get back to 7...) but will try to get on the bike soon.  all i need to figure out is how to tow a kayak behind my bike  :smt001

I've had a good week so far.  I've avoided all office candy this week and have not had a cookie, dessert, or late evening snack.  Four days... that's big for a guy with a BAD sweet tooth.

The changes to my diet are (1)eat a healthy breakfast, healthy lunch, and healthy dinner (no fast food), (2) practice portion control at all meals (which is one of my big issues)... (3)and cut the sweets in between... only healthy snacks if any at all... and (4) drink more water during the day.

We'll see if it yeilds any results.

The exercise bandwagon may start next week if I can get the elliptical free'd up in the garage.

my cell phone had a pedometer in it and does not hesitate to illustrate lazy days...it even has graphing and trend software built-in, so I can see what the long-term looks like  :smt012  stupid machine...

on the down-side, since getting it I keep it with me all the time(gotta record ALL those steps)  :smt002

Lots of good stuff so far.  Where to begin ...

Yeah, I'm skipping the detox.

I find that a good way to diet is to cook all your food and banish 'easy' food from the home.  That way the motivation threshold to make food is higher because it'll take 10-20 minutes on the stove rather than 1-2 in the microwave.  Then make only as much as you need to eat.

Great advice!

and so went the diet for 2 more days........FAIL   :smt011

Dude, Don, don't beat yourself up over that.  It could have been WAY worse.

That is a very strong start EK.  I am no fitness guru but I'd expect for your discipline to be paid dividends rather soon.

The exercise bandwagon may start next week if I can get the elliptical free'd up in the garage.

Does this translate to ... dig out from under the pile of ruble?  :smt044

I'm always interested in staying healthy, so I'm lurking on these threads even though I'm pretty happy with my current weight. I'm trying to drink less beer though :smt003
As far as the Master Cleanse goes, I've had several friends (a couple of which are professional nutritionist/trainers) do it. It does work, but success depends on how committed the individual is.
One thing for sure, it is basically impossible to do the cleanse & maintain a pre-cleanse schedule. There are just too many days of feeling weak while your body adjusts. Of all the cleanses I've looked into, it's the best I can find, but you have to really do some research before you commit to it.

& just to stir things up here, I'm not a fan of BMI. I'm 5'10" and 200lbs even. I look that up on a BMI scale & it tells me I'm overweight, to the point of obesity? Gimme a break. Muscle weighs a heck of a lot more than, um, insulation.
I'm not knocking BMI totally though. It's just I feel that it shouldn't be the end-all word on fitness measurement. I have a friend I paddle with who is 5'11" and weighs 180+, but I have so much more physical endurance it's not even funny. We once paddled a fav exercise triangle (sc harbor to seal rock to mile buoy, then back to harbor) and he was wrecked for 2 days, while I went kayak fishing the next day up at Bean :smt102.

I'll wrap with a favorite story. Years ago I read in Outside magazine about an ecochallenge across the Sahara (maybe it was the Gobi?) desert. After 3 days of trekking, etc. the teams made it to an oasis to rest for 24hrs. The American team, who was sponsored by PowerBar, was eating energy bars & drinking gatorade. The Italian team stayed up late eating salami sandwiches, drinking red wine, and smoking handrolled cigarettes while they joked & laughed.

The Italians won the whole event a few days later.

So just be sure to have some fun on your respective paths to lessened girth.
Ya'll have my total support & respect & I look forward to fishing with ya in the coming months.

Great ideas...I am largely in alignment with Mr. Dilbecks sentiments, but also trying to keep Juan's wise words in mind as well.  So far this week:

I went rollerblading with Elsie at the gawd-awful skating rink.  Decent exercise and great dad time

I dropped my car off for service and passed on the shuttle....walked to my office and walked back for pick-up.

Bike commuted yesterday...and ran a few work errands as well.  A fun and easy 1.5 hours w/o cutting into fishing or family time.

Skipped seconds at dinner...that one HURT!!!
