My buddy Micah (just got his kayak and is new to kayak fishing) is looking for places to fish in San Luis Obispo? Any productive spots in and around the area?

Please advise / thank you!

Mooch,

Bonita finally boogied South last week, but the surf perch are hittin good. There's been a few flatties landed in 2 spots. And we're planning another Nurple Point thresher expedition once the water settles.

What kind of action is he looking for?

All he has to do is show up anywhere in the vicinity of the Flemish Cap, say "I know Mooch*" & he'll be given the golden keys to paradise.  He'll have to take the oath of subterfuge, of course, followed by a crash course in obfuscation (to be posted on this thread shortly).

Upon successful demonstration of all of the above, there will be a blood rite taken; (only performed @ midnight on the 1st Blue Moon of the year).  After that he's in.

I'm thinking some thresher fishing in January would be a good initiation for any greenhorn interested in testing the waters round here.  If he's game he should pm me or Littoral.

PJ

*Note;  Tangible proof of knowing Mooch to be supplied upon request (a photograph taken with Mooch, a signed letter from Mooch, a Christmas card, etc.).  We've had a few impostors try to throw your name around here recently so we had to implement stricter rules.

The 5 Rules of Obfuscation,

1. Read "The Ocean Almanac" by Robert Henderson, cover to cover.  2x is better than 1.  And 3x, whell...

2.  Allegory, doublespeak & outright lying are all acceptable when mixed with half-truths.

3. Whenever possible metaphors are to be used in lieu of specific names of places.  The more creative the better.  Historical maritime names with literary reference better still.  See #1.

4. No pictures shall be taken with easily identifiable landmarks, i.e. proximity to Disneyland etc.

5. Don't feel bad about trying to color information.  Offering creative information without giving away the honey-hole is a time-honored maritime tradition dating back to the 14th century.  See #1.

Sincerely,
PJ

You guys crack me up :smt044 But thanks for the info. I'll have him sign up and chime in to this thread. He's there for college so I might be able to make some trips down there next year (09) and hope to meet you local pros and maybe even get the rare opportunity of fishing the mighty flemish cap :smt002

Leffingwell Landing at the north end of Moonstone Beach, Avila Beach, Morro Bay and San Simeon Pier are good places for newbies however a south and sometimes west swell can produce some shore dump. If fishing is slow, get a microbrew at the Westend Bar and Grill in Cambria and drown your sorrows.  :smt005

Hi Guys! Finally made it on to NCKA at the constant urging of mooch. Thanks for the replies PJ, littoral, and Great Bass. I haven't fished in SLO or from a kayak, so I have no idea what to expect.

I have been busy reading "The Ocean Almanac", only twice, but I need more time. Also, I have a lock of mooch's hair as proof that I know him.

Anytime you guys are heading out in SLO, let me know. I'd relish the opportunity to learn from seasoned veterans.

Welcome killer!

The alleged lock of Mooch hair will of course need to be analyzed, but we will keep you in the loop for future trips pending the blood oath.

Are you in SLO now?

I would lose the lock of hair before you start eating Organic Quinoa instead of rice and paddling a surfboard instead of a yak.  :smt044

I will be down in Cambria in 2009 a few times and will post in hookups unless it is a comando mission to a top secret location or other shark infested waters.  :smt005

I used to live in San Luis Obispo.  I didn't fish any of the ocean - I had a great fear of the ocean - well more like the VERY large and grey and mmm, man eating fish that live in it... I am over it now.  I am ready to fish for a thresher.  Thanks DOC!

Anyway.

I can recommend a few other places...

Lake Nacimiento is awesome for white bass and meowmeows - if you like that sort of thing.

Santa Margarita lake is a great place for sm bass and meowmeows

Lake San Antonio has some decent bass too.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive, there is a creek up in Los Padres through Fort Hunter Liggett that has some trout and small bass.

High on my list of places to fish there is Whale Rock Reservoir...

While you're on the subject, is it possible to catch threshers out of Cambria?  How would you target and find them from a kayak?
