Just got a Loomis 6-12 lb. med action rod 8'6" long and a Diawa Reel good for saltwater.
Picked them up for steelhead fishing, but got to thinking this setup would also work for striper I'm thinkin'.

I've never been striper fishing on the yak yet and wondered if this setup will pull double duty. Any opinions?

Pretty bored here in Aptos now that rockfish is closed, after the new year, I'm gonna need to hook up for some striper with you guys...

We used noodles like that 90% of the time, trolling and baitfishing.  I like something a bit heavier, 10-15lb but the 6-12 will work fine.
Plugging was more of a 7'6-8 foot range.

It's a bit longer than what I use, but the rating is the same as the rod I use at Lake Mendocino for slow trolling minnows. I like 10lb mainline with a 10 lb flouro leader. Nice present!  :smt007

I agree it is a little longer than I normally use, but it should work well for stripers.
I'm gonna try it this weekend with fishmaster1 saturday.

Should be fun I would downsize my hooks a little and make sure they are sharp getting a good hook set is tough with the lite rod.

long rods like that are great to get around the bow of your yak without moving too much out of the seat, so I think you will like it.  I have used similar stuff for stripers.

i use a 8'6 shimano medium action salmon/steelhead rod. have not had any problems with any fish yet, including stripers, salmon (cohos in alaska and a king), halibut.  i don't mind the 8'6 length, haven't had any problems with it in my kayak yet.

Bassmanben

I'm glad to hear you like your setup.

I wanted a combo setup that would work for multiple applications.

I can't wait to get back out there, it's a long wait for rockfish to open, if I don't find a different quarry, I'll go mad!
