Is it better to store kayaks upright, upside down or on sides? In slings or on horses? How much support is needed and what are the key areas to support?

Thanks. Rob

Here's Ocean Kayak's recommendations on storing your kayak.

http://www.oceankayak.com/product_support/storage.html

Quote
How To Store Your Ocean Kayak
Ocean Kayak blends an added measure of ultraviolet inhibitors into the plastic of your boat to give superior protection from ultraviolet light. However, to ensure extra years of flexibility and bright colors, avoid storing the boat in direct sunlight.

Kayaks should be stored on edge, upside down, standing, or hanging horizontally. When hanging the boats, run straps around the boat near the cockpit. A word of caution - using the scupper holes may cause distortion and hanging from the toggle handles may put undue strain on them. Storing the boat bottom side down may also cause distortion. Kayak storage systems are available from your dealer.

To secure your kayak, simply run a cable through your scupper holes. Locks are available through your dealer.

Personally, I store mine on their sides on the ground/floor.

Hope that helps.

Brian

I keep mine on the trailer in the garage with 2 upright in saddles and 2 upside down the 2 in the saddles get a slight dent (if not used often) but the 2 upside down have not had any problems

Having tried them all I am happiest with upside down.  No hull distortion or other weidness and you can store a lot in a small area with a simple rack.

Damn, with all my OK Pro Staff homies checkin in, I feel obligated to join the party.

I store mine on their sides, against the wall or other kayaks ...

I hang two of mine from the garage ceiling upside down. They take up zero space and get zero distortion.

Thanks for all the replies!

I use a motorcycle cable lock for locking them down, its much thicker and I presume harder to cut.

I store mine upside down strapped to the ceiling of my garage. They are completely out of the way and easy to access. As a bonus, since they are upside down and inside I am able to store them with the hatches removed so they are always dry when I show up for mussel inspections.
