Met up with Allen @ his VERY nice place @ 5 ish, loaded up up and in 40 min or so launched onto lake-like conditions.
We got our limits of good sized abs in no time and went south.
The fishing was, for some reason other than full moon, on the slow side.
Still, we both encountered pockets of action, my biggie was the hail mary 28 or so inch ling that took a teaser in the kelp. Took a couple of decent blacks, a few last gophers of the year and some china cod. Add those to a limit of abs and I feel good about leaving this rock-cod season to memory and a freezer full of food. I think we have about 25 or 30 lbs of fillet from this season for the winter. GOT TO LOVE THIS SPORT!
So sorry about not taking any pics... I think o-to-be took one...
PS Allen showed me the spot for pigs, and sure enough, when we went past, there they were! Wonder how they did at Sonoma?....

Good to hear about the fish and the "lake like" conditions, I'm headed that way tomorrow, but haven't dove for abs at Ft Ross since the 80s. I usually end up somewhere in the Salt Point park but tomorrow I'll be solo and the Fort seems like a good place for that.

So my question is if I just do a shore dive, where do I go, not looking for trophys, just some abs to close the season.

if your gonna shore-dive, try the south end of the north cove. there is a trail with a guide rope to a rock beach.

Thats great! It sounds like you guys may have gotten the last decent weekend of the year. The swell model for this coming weekend doesn't look too hot. Unless your a surfer. I think that you got it right for today . The buoys are way down with an offshore.Congrats on the abs and fish. I wish I could of gone with you guys but you should see my garage! You can actually see the other side of it. Where will you fish next Guitarzan? You are always on the water. I'm envious.Craig

The morning started out foggy  inland but as Ben and I neared the coast the sky above the ocean cleared showing us the long low swells...... another beautiful day on the water. Fishing was a little slow but I was on a mission to soak up as much of the experience as I kept thinking back to ocean salmon fishing last year. Had someone told me then that would have been it for years or who knows, I might have looked at it differently at the time.
The ab diving was great with good visibility for the first few dives but we must have stirred up the decaying kelp on the bottom and things got a little murky towards the end. I caught a decent ling and the other usual suspects with a few of them joining us for the ride home. Ben pulled a Hail Mary on a nice  ling as I was already headed for the beach.  Time to put away the rock fishing gear for now and see what else is biting......
