Don't make the mistake I made. My GF and I were paddling Lake Tahoe from Cave Rock to Zephyr Cove, and were taking pics along the way.
We had lunch and a couple of drinks at Zephyr Cove, then started heading back. We ended up hooking up with a another couple who were on a boat. I was able to have the guy pull me with his boat while I was on my kayak, quite a rush. It was a Kodak moment to say the least, but not better than this. Since the couple was from Europe, going topless was not an issue. Having me at the stern with a beautiful topless woman in each arm was THE Kodak moment. As the guy was ready to shoot the pic with my camera, kayaks in the back ground of course, nothing happened. DEAD BATTERIES!!! The 'on' button must have been pressed while it was in my dry bag, draining the batteries. And of course this was the ONE time I didn't have any spares.
ALWAYS carry an extra set of batteries, even if you have to buy some on your way to wherever you go. You never know when you might really hook into one and want to share it with your friends. :smt002

Tote,
In my profession, batteries are key for a variety of reasons.  I ALWAYS carry in my vehicle an extra 12-volt battery for emergencies, four 'D' batteries for certain "power tools" and 12 AA batteries for photographic needs.
Sorry you had to learn the hard way.  Let this be a lesson to you all!
Really man, that sucks ... I feel for you.
