I've been on a quest to try as many types of fishing as I can.  Having already hit the basics I'm looking for some of the more novel methods.

The mainstream methods I've done..

-power boat fishing
-row boat/canoe fishing
-party boat fishing
-surf fishing
-pier fishing
-fly fishing

Novel methods I've done already...

-kayak fishing (maybe this should be mainstream now)
-spear fishing
-ice fishing
-poke-poling
-cast netting
-dip netting
-seining
-trawling
-electro-fishing

Legal novel methods I haven't tried ..

-float tubing (mainstream?)
-kite fishing
-noodling
-bow fishing

Illegal novel methods I'll probably never try..

-poisoning
-dynamite

Am I missing anything?  I find it hard to believe I only have four more legal genres of fishing to try.

That's some crazy stuff right there!  :smt118

By the way... Alex (Aliens) had mentioned something about "Flossing".....maybe he can fill us in with the details...I did not believe him at first but he swears by it. I thought he was insane in the membrane when he first told me about it  :smt096

Alex...wanna share this unique method of fishing????

What about jug fishing?  It's illegal in CA, but not in some other states.

Also, if you part native american, you can gill net on the rivers (I assume thats still legal in places like the Klamath).

I was thinking trot-lining, it's probably along the same lines as jug fishing.

Thanks for the ideas, keep'em coming.

Mooch, if you think noodling is crazy stuff, I highly recommend that you rent "Okie noodling".  You can find it on Netflix, but I don't know about you average video rental store.

As for trot lining,  I've done that for blue crabs on the Chesapeake.  I guess there is a whole world of non-fish fishing I haven't thought about.  BTW, kite fishing, which I haven't tried, seems like it's a form of trot lining/jug fishing in which you use a kite to send the jug way out from shore.  Evidently you can also use a RC boat to do the same.

How about spearing through the ice...

Used to do this for Burbot (aka. eelpout or lawyers) back home in WI / MN and is also legal for Northern Pike in some lakes in MN.

Also... netting through the ice... not sure of the technical term.

This is done for Carp by large commercial outfits in some MN lakes in the winter.  At the lake near where I went to college in southern MN they would haul the carp out of there by the semi load for weeks at a time.

Heard about some local kids who did some jug fishing at the base of the bridge (Truckee river) at Tahoe city. One kid threw the lines in at the bridge (using a 2x4 instead of a clorox bottle), while his co conspiriter waited downstream for the pickup.
This spot held some really nice trout and was/is a tourist attraction for all the fish. Of course no fishing is allowed.   No idea what happened to these punks.

Dynamite fishing -- I've done that... by accident, of course! :smt077

I once dropped a huge weighted firecracker into a river while doing a 4th of July float trip in Oklahoma.  When that thing went off, saw several fish came flying out of the river.  One of them actually landed in our raft.

Noodling!  If your looking to get freaky, noodling has got to be on your list.

People use 'slurp guns' to suck up little fish when scuba diving.  That's more for aquaria collecting than for food though.

You could also try diving with a poke-pole and wiggle the bait in fishes faces until they hit it.

here's one for ya..Dam fishing!!
My ex-father-in-law did it when he was a kid in Washington.
The salmon would make their way up tiny creeks in some meadows. They would take a piece of plywood and wedge it between the shores ( maybe 3-4 feet apart ). The flow would stop momentarily, long enough for the nearest salmon to be flopping where there used to be water. They would grab the fish, then release the dam.
I questioned it until I saw the creek ( crick as he called it ) with a salmon or two in it.

How about "Snagging"?

I haven't done it, but I've seen others up the Sacramento river snag salmon with big treble hooks.
