Lon,
We had good success jigging with 6 oz diamond jigs with trebles for the macks.  Last time out, I think we got 5 macks, all on diamonds.  FYI, its not uncommon to fowl hook a mack.

If you have a FF, it helps GREATLY.  Don't recall the depth, but I'd guess 150-200ft.  When you land them, they get bloated and look like footballs.  When you gut them, all the air comes out and they get "skinny".

Fishing is VERY similar to rockcod.

Our tactics on Tahoe were to troll for bows in the am (flatfish lure) let out WAY, WAY back behind the boat because the water is so clear.  Also, we did a zig, zag pattern since we didn't have side planers.  The depth for bows was much shallower, though I don't recall (20-40 feet maybe?).  Once it got sunny, we cruise the deeper water looking for spots to Jig for macks.  The best bottom structure is around and between pinnacles.  Here, the trollers with downriggers can't reach them, but jig fisherman can drop right down on them.  If you have the FF, paddle around and look for the fish off the bottom.

We fished south out of Tahoe City.  One of these days I'd like to hit Cave Rock, just past Stateline.

On more thing, Donner also has some big macks too.

Ever notice how macs and lings look alike? Body shape that is.

8 oz diamond bars over way deep water like Stu said.. The bigger fish will feed on the 8 -10 inch kokes.

Good luck.

From a yak, EARLY in the morning, done by 8:30am using this method.
Diving plane, watermelon dodger and a watermelon apex, or switch the apex for a silver Yozuri.
They will be up in shallower water early. You can get them in 30-50 feet of water.
Later go DEEP.

Hey Tote.

Going up for a couple of days.  Where was your put in at?  I have fished for macks from a PB but never a yak.  Sounds like a good time!  Sounds like salmon fishing to me when there up top in the morning.  Do you need the Flasher?
