I have a new kayak which I love but due to my current mass, I sink the tank well and put about an inch or two of water back there. Unfortunately, that's where I keep my Plano boxes of stuff which fill with water cause I currently have a milk crate. I want to use a 5 gallon bucket, but am looking for creative suggestions on how to put the PVC pipe on it.

Thanks!

The simple method I've seen is to hold the pipe next to the bucket wall, drill four holes and attach tightly with zipties. Cheap, easy, effective.

I use aircraft pop rivets from Hook1. I cut the bottom of the PVC at an angle so I can access the inside of the tube and rivet it into the bucket (see pic). For the top attchment I drill a 3/4 inch hole on the outside of the tube so the rivet gun tip will fit and then drill and rivet the inside of the tube to the small rail around the bucket. This makes the holders strong and gives them just the right angle.

I used the ziptie method. I gooped them in place first. (My PVC holders are inside the bucket)

But, I would urge caution. It sounds like you're going to use the bucket as a place to keep things dry. Bear in mind that this will also mean the bucket will fill with water should your yak flip. I guess this would be safe if your bucket is not attached to your yak. (My bucket is strapped in but I drilled it full of holes and cut away part of the sides so it will not fill with water)

It might be easier to line the bottom of your milk crate with a couple of inches of foam padding?

Everyone,

Thanks for the info. It really helps. I was wondering about drilling a hole in the pvc pipe for the rivet gun but didn't think to angle the bottom. Good idea.

As for flipping the kayak, I usually belly everything I can (stow below inside the kayak) prior to major moving events or when I'm going into and out of the surf line. The first time I took this one out (Cobra Marauder) I made it almost 5-feet before totally flipping it. And this was in 1' surf. It's very stable, just not as stable as my old OK Malibu Two XL. I'm better now, but still cautious. And thanks to a brilliant suggestion by Mooch, all of my kayak rods are 2pc so they go below as well. I'm currently mounting some velcro to the bottom so I can secure things better when I crash and roll.

Thanks again and I will post pictures when I'm finished.
