Some of the party boats have finally been allowed to fish on their "experimental deep water" permits. Fishing in 900ft depth for chilipeppers. Sounds like a real workout. It's an interesting read.

Looks like the saying " anyday fishing is better than work " is finally questionable ? Been doing a bit of reading on this type of fishing and it looks like way too much effort for the take . Could be wrong , but from reports , it looks like a 2 fish limit , somebody please tell me that is wrong ! From pictures posted the fish look to be 3-5 lbs .

My rockfishing days started 30 years ago when ALL the party boats fished 200-300' of water with heavy gear and weights to match , large reel handles and rod plates ! Light tackle trips are now the only way I go , don't need that kind of a workout trying to enjoy myself . Personally think these real deep water fishing is a young man's game .

OOOPS ! , after reading this different article I see the limit is 10 ..

What is a "rod plate"?

What is a "rod plate"?

This is a plate mounted to the rod just above the reel with a lip to hook on to the rail, so when your pinned to the rail of a party boat cranking up your 2# ball from 300'+ it supports your rod evenly..........Those where the day's as a little kid with dad and brother fishing Cordell Bank out of Bodega bay.

I think I want to the try the 900' stuff just to reminisce about the good ol days of limitless rock fish.

Abman ,
Same here except it was out of Pillar Point , before it was what it has grown to today . the captians of the 4 OLD boats would go to their anchorage and bring their boats over to the dock to load passengers .

I think the shallow water kayak crew have unlimited rockfish to  a degree , to bad they can't keep the season open all year for private small craft ! Once, while on a PB out of Bodega I asked the captian why the PBs go so far out when I have done better within a 1/2 -1 mile out in my little boat . Answer was , that his customers would get generally pissed if they paid all that money to fish and could still see the jetty/Bodega head ! Very understandable ! I by the way was on a completely paid for trip by Anhauser Busch , right down to our lunch , tips , pot and fish cleaning , August Busch is a class act !!!

Would not mind being
a observer / photographer on one of those 900+ trips , but too old for that kind of workout ! Second best thing to catching fish is being there and watching !

Yeah, I've often considered volunteering to just ride along and man a fish-descender (on the regular rockfish trips). I think I'd still be taking away a spot from a paying customer tho'.

Hopefully this takes off and gets the party boats out of the nearshore.  Doesn't sound like something we'd be likely to be allowed to do, even though we can get to those depths in monterey bay.

I remember going for RF with my dad on his bayliner back in the early 80's off Davenport in 300' it was a workout reeling in a yarn 3-hook jig loaded with fish from 300 feet!

Jeez, guess I'm gonna show my age here, but I remember 7 hook gangions with 5# of weight in SoCal.  But how exciting it was when the swim bladders popped & the fish floated your weight up for you!

I'm gonna show my age here,

Guess I'm older I remember 800',6/0-10/0 reels, 80lb dacron,12 hook rigs and 11lb sash weights lotta work but you only had to make a couple drops and they started floating 1/2 way up no fight at all. If you wanna go Phil you can borrow my gear it will sink a kayak.

It's a kind offer but I don't need it.  e2g was right all along, i'm completely juiced, spent the last weekend hauling in humboldt squid from 2000 ft on a hand line made from kelp.  :cowboy_smoke:

No pics, a humboldt squid ate my camera.
