WoW this is a real cool website,

I realy want to get my own kayak, I have been using my Dads and realy like the sport.

I have been looking at the Minni-x. The length and width seems to be verry conveniant.

I plan on fishing small bodies of water with minimul boat trafic, and maybe hit the russian when I get a little more confident.

Here is my BIG delema! I am a big guy, about 302 Lbs. what should I expect from a yak that is only rated to #325  (more on the fit side, than the rolly polly side)

I can be a minimalist when It comes to gear so I dout that I will ecede the #325 mark.

I have herd that when geting close to weight limit the boat starts to take on water through the scupps, My dads is a SIK so this Idea is a little freaky.

Do you guys think that I should Look at a difrent boat, or do you think I could pull off the mini.

I live in Lakeport and I know that BAM is around the corner, my wife thinks I should shoot over to Mendo and check out some Kayak porn! When and were do you guys weigh in at.

Thanks Jason

Welcome to the madness  :smt044 I'm 6' and weigh 300#. I have a Malibu X-Factor that is really big. Have gone on the ocean and all. I have been on my son's mini-X and have a good time in it also. When you turn in it, you turn. It is a lot of fun in the lakes and all. If you plan on going out into the ocean and big water, you need a good stable yak. If you plan on only the rivers and small lake the mini is a good thing. I really like my X-Factor. Get a hold of Sean (GWKC) and he has some Ocean Kayaks that he too, has for sale. They are of differrent length's. Good Luck, and "WELCOME"  :smt006

Welcome!

You've probably read this before if you've been doing any reasearch: try before you buy...  BAM would be a great opportunity, you could probably finagle test rides in just about every kayak on the market.

My son will be fishing @ BAM on his Mini-X. You're welcome to take it for a spin. Be sure to demo as many kayaks you can before you buy.

"Shoot on over," heck, I say you sign up and fish off of somebody else's rig. :smt003  :smt004   You may end up winning yourself a boat.  It isn't a mini-x but they are fabulous boats.

I shouldn't speak for somebody else, but I'd bet that somebody may let you use their mini-x for the tournament - that is just how great this group of guys is.

BTW, it sounds like you have an awesome wife.

Look forward to meeting you on Oct. 4th - hopefully fishing.

Michael

In the land of kayaks your a really big guy.  The mini is a great boat, but i think its too mini for you, you need a big guy boat.

Look at my avatar.  Not me, but it could be!  So I know of what you speak.

even as a minimalist you will be over capacity on the boat.  Water in the scuppers is just wet, but if you have hatches near the water line, you will take on water, which makes you heavier which puts you deeper :smt010  Plus it seems that kayaks start to get unstable as you approach their limits.   Not necessarily tippy but just respond "jerky."

my first boat was rated 375 which was fine until you filled the tankwell with a load of fish and get a boat wakel washing over the deck.  I have upgraded to a trident and like it alot.

I am a regular big guys...6-1 210 and love the Trident.  I was a bigger guy when I had an X-factor and also found it to be comfy.  The Trident is much faster and lighter, the X is a couch...bigger but more comfy.

Sean, have been PMing Jason (Clearlakekid) and I'm going to hook-up with him at Mendo Fri. AM. Going to do some fishing or course, and let him try my X-Factor and the Mini-X that my son bought. You off Friday to meet up and let him try some of your yaks? Just thought I would ask.  :smt006

I am headed for the Klamath tonight, I won't be around.  I already sold my Trident, to another well known big man.  Look for dead sturgeon on an orange Trident in the winter.

You guys are too cool for school !!!!  :smt004

I would fish BAM, but I am have never cought a stiped bass before.

I have fished mendo maybe three times, and that was a tournament with the Clear Lake Bassmasters, Bass club.

My kayak is going to be my primary Highland Springs Exprees!!!
This lake is electric motors only, and is to small to get rough.

The mini-x would fill agreat void, (if it works out)
I would love to just grab the mini and walk to the lake, I am lucky that way,
I can throw a rock and hit the lake from my front porch.

I have a float tube but.... well it's a float tube,

I dont want to even try to put the Ranger in, The ramps are (if you could call them ramps) are verry primitive. I can just picture ripping a fender off the trailer, or busting the skag off the Optimax.

I am geting exited to be able to try a minni I have been looking at them for about a month.
It was very nice to have the information that this site provided when looking to get into the sport.

The fact that you guys are willing to help a newby just shows how mutch the sport means to you.

I would like to thank Rory and you guys, for your help and info.  :smt003

FWIW I'm about your size and paddle a Manta Ray 14.  Is a very dry ride, with tons of room, very stable, yet paddles straight and coasts along pretty good.

I also have a Drifter, which is also considered a big dudes boat, but is much wetter and handles like a barge.

That said, I would like a tiny boat for lakes, where being wet is almost a bonus on hot days.

The Drifter is pretty comfortable, but a lot of water will come thru the scupper holes with you on it.  On lakes you can plug them, but in the ocean you just have to live with it.

It's a pretty decent boat, but will not track nearly as well as a lotta other kayaks.  It's built for comfort rather than speed.

You might consider an Ocean Kayak Trident 13.  Smaller boat but big weight capacity (475#) and set up nice for fishing.

The Trident 11 may be cutting it close on weight capacity (350 to 400#) but might also be worth a peek.
