Yup, that was the case for me at Stillwater. But, I did not give up so easily like
last time I got sick. I stuck it out even when the swell was getting worst. I don't
know how high it was exactly but way too high for me. There were lots of little
chinas and coppers around. I keep three decent sizes and release most of them
back. Sitting here while typing I can still feel the swell. I hope to get use to
this sick feeling because I really enjoy going out on the Big Blue. Nice meeting you
Captain kayak and FindThatFish.

Thanks again Northern Boy for the invite.

Great report and pics, Jed.  Way to stick it out - you'll get used to it over time.   :smt001

I'm working through the same issues Jed so don't feel too bad. Just about every time I paddle out I do the technicolor yawn at least once  :smt078  Like you though, I just keep fishing. Oddly, getting sick never really keeps me from continuing to fish hard.

Here's a little tip I learned last time I was out: Drink peppermint tea. It won't stop you from getting sick, but after tossing your cookies you have a nice minty flavor in your mouth!  :smt005

You should try that scopalamine patch It works great. I dont get sick on shorter boats or in the kayak. When we used to fish on the larger party boats that wouls start that queasy, that diesel smells bad, look out projectile puking. When I wore the patch I could eat tuna and greasy KFC and love every minute of it. I am glad you made it up. Thats got to be a brutal drive. Move to Petaluma and you will be much closer. By those pics(which are nice) the water looks pretty flat. At least you did not come up today at 6am it was smokin already with 20 knots.

Before I got the yak madness I used to go out on party boats all the time and would end up chumming more often than not.  The chumming would stop once I started catching fish (adrenaline) and I could function until we would start the long boat ride in.  Then sleep was my best friend.

On one trip my arms started tingling and my hands were cramping so bad I could barely hold the rod and keep reeling.  So the scopalamine patch (not the scopace tablets) has kept me in the game.  After I discovered the patch I found myself fishing off the front of the boat with only a few diehards because it was bucking too hard for most folks.  Try the scopace?...not worth it for me to take that chance.  If I did take the scopace I'd probably drink the peppermint tea first, LOL.

Hope to fish with you folks in the near future but excuse me if I stay out of projectile range.

Ginger is also good for settling the stomach. Try getting some of the candied ginger at the market and nibble on it as you fish. Also good ginger snaps are good for it too. If it's rough out I'll get a little of that good ol' barfy feelin' and often times I can keep it at bay with the ginger. I can eat a horse when I get back on shore after tho... :smt005

don't eat anything before, don't drink too much before & whatever you do DO NOT DRINK ANY ALCOHOL THE NIGHT BEFORE!!!

maybe you could have a banana or a cliff bar in the morning but nothing more & stay away from the greasy foods & don't look down!

good luck, keep going, it goes away!!!

yeah it was rolling. In the pics and the video (in the other thread) it doesn't look too bad, but it certainly picked up as the day went on. I was feeling very nauseous. Three things I would recommend in addition to a seasickness pill;

1. DON'T LOOK DOWN! This is the killer for me. When tying rigs or unhooking fish, look up at the horizon every couple of seconds.
2. What jonesz said; ginger helps me a lot
3. Eat! It might seem odd, but when I'm feeling sick I eat something (usually ginger snaps) and it really helps. Also have a full stomach before you start. I see PJ recommends the opposite :smt044 Well, all I can tell you is it works for me.

The 4th thing I would recommend is a good nights sleep but we all know thats not possible!

I'm with northern boy on this one on all counts, including the eating. PJ, you might reconsider that one.

One thing that makes a huge difference for me is going a lot. The first couple trips of the season I like to have calm days or a calm easy spot like santa cruz. Later in the seaon it seems I can take anything. It really can get better, but you got to get a good base early in the season. In the same vein, longer paddles early in the season give you the base too.

I have used the accupressure wrist bands on some long boat rides that start in the dark and that seems to work for me and I know a doctor that uses them for her kids.

the other thing for me is familiarity and confidence. If I have fished a spot before and know my boat and equipment I just feel way more relaxed and that seems to be a big key.

some of the guys that have used the meds early in the season could probably stop and find themselves fine later in the season.

Trader Joe's has some good ginger soft candy. It packs a little heat that will refocus your brain to your taste buds.  I go with modest, easy to digest meals the night before and in the morning, nothing very spicy , and, if any, just a glass of wine.
Getting up early to go fishing does tend to interfere with regular bowel functions, so give that end of the digestive track a chance to wake up and complete its job if that's your normal routine.
This last week we've had some mixed NW and SW swells - those can be hard for the brain to compute.  And times when it's mixed with short periods are the worst for me, even tho I normally do pretty well and don't take any meds, but I get out regularly.  I wonder if it would help to twirl in circles a couple of times each day, or ride the Big Dipper blindfolded so your brain keeps those balance neurons tuned up?
