Evening fish in Monterey

Randy and I decided to do something a little different and launched at 5pm for some late fishing in the kelp in Monterey Bay.
Action was slow, but I got a small gopher on the top hook of my jig.  I dropped it back down and bingo, got a second fish, but not the anticipated ling.  Instead, I had a territorial, nocturnal feeding Treefish.

I hope the picture worked okay.  This is a first for us.  He was nice size, about 10 inches.

I suspect the reason that we had never seen one in the real before as well is that they are a night feeder, so you don't hook one during a normal, morning fishing excursion.  Those red lips are very prominent.  He looked like a caricature of a fish.
