Blue Water Jon's experience was enough to convince me.

Are you kidding...have you watched his video???   The lamest waterman/fisherman ever on film.   The guy couldn't even get back in his own boat...credibility rating of ZERO.  I doubt he even knows his own birthday.

As far as waiting to turn it on....  If you see them you probably don't need it.  The element of surprise is gone and they are much less likely to attack.  I know I would not have had time to turn one on when I had my meeting with the man.

Well, I've never met the man, and ya, saw the video on the Islander... :smt002

But, he gets out on the water and does put himself out there, and does sensationalize...
I guess not the best reference, but take that experience and the other's I've heard from our Auqan Bro's,

and I think you have some real kayak fishing shark shield test...

Agreed. If I had one I'd leave that sucker ON.

2X a year...on a boat...he just happens to hire a film crew when he goes.

If you have a rudder that folds up, you can hang the shark shield on it (but use some sort of safety clip so it doesn't fall off if you deploy the rudder by mistake or flip the yak). then the shark shield acts like a rudder. probably makes a little more sense to hang it off something in your tankwell, but I hate when the yak tracks to one side all the time, I find it frustrating and annoying. Much prefer hanging things straight off the back whenever possible, whether trolling lines or shark shields!

I turn mine on before I launch, turn it off after I land.

I love big water jon's stuff! Quality Entertainment!

everything was charged...  If you have not been " Zapped " by this thing at all...

I would be concerned if it is working properly.... my 2 centavos..

Awesome. I'd love to have a sighting WITHOUT INCIDENT. Glad to hear everyone's OK and some good fish were had to boot!

Damn, you guys did great out there.   Freaky sighting out there, the not knowing of where the damn thing went after the dorsal disappeared would have been too much for me to handle.

This Shark Shield talk is interesting stuff. I certainly don't have any answers, but I have a lot of questions.

The Hawaii guys deal with tigers, not SCWA's mascot (uh Sean, do you still believe you should use the taxman's image without explicit permission?  :smt001). Although I understand proper Shark Shield operation is to leave it on at all times, in 2006 standard Hawaiian kayak angler procedure was to wait for a tiger to crash the party.

Indeed, I was fishing with Steven Heusser off Honokohau Harbor near Kona when I noticed a disturbance in the water off his stern quarter. It looked a bit larger than his P15 kayak (Hey, in water everything looks larger. That's why I always hop in the bath and call my wife over when I'm feeling frisky. Oops, TMI).

Anyhow, a tiger was stalking Steve, who didn't take long at all to fire up his zapper. Mr. T sank out quietly.

'Kinda like what happened to Bluewater Jon - without the vivid 'we coulda been killed' account, but I won't lie. My motivation to fish evaporated faster than 151 at a frat party. In fact, I told Steve I was paddling in to take a dump. Draw your own conclusion - but know I kept my shirt sleeves.  :smt001

(Another aside, do you guys think I'd be pitching stories in the big leagues if I were a tireless self-promoter?)

The foregoing all by way of explanation...

So, tigers and whites are different cats. 'Cause it works on a bold, aggressive model, why should it deter an ambush predator? Just asking... And I've interviewed a guy who compares an activated shark shield to a blaring car alarm - they can also attract sharkey's notice (hey, I'm a hack writer, analogies catch my easily diverted deadline-frazzled attention).

I don't known nuthin', except my birthday is 9-18-66.  :smt001

Did he give any reason of why this would be???

It's really my Biggest Question about this thing....

PAL,

I see the logic in the car alarm analogy 'cause of what researchers say about the fish sensing electrical fields of all sorts. Still no "fer-sure" sale here either.

Taxes, shirt sleeves,  'n TMI -  :smt007  :smt005

Nice to see you're reading the rest of the forum, and happy belated birthday, too.

Amen to that.....until I see the shark shield completely stop a full bore ambush attack from a GW, then I'll invest in one. Let's all remember that we are not in Hawaii and that we don't deal with Tigers around here - just my 2 cents...

Mooch... you'll probably be waiting a long time for that.  If it deters an ambush attack that you'd never see coming from underneath, then you'd probably never see the shark turn away either.

Good point EK...but perhaps we can troll a kayak at Ano Nuevo with a shark shield on it and with a video cam underneath and see what really happens :smt002
