I bought a humminbird last night for my p15. I thought about using the scupper recess but i opted for a hidden transducer inside the hull. Since i cant use the search from my cell. Can someone give me some mounting tips? Thanks. Jeff

I would use the pool noodle to make a holder for the transducer.  The pool noodle seems to stick better to the inside of the yak than the transducer itself.

Perfect. And using the transom mount transducer that it came with works fine for this?

Yes.

With the pool noodle method you don not need to Goop the transducer at all.  Just make a good seal with the noodle and then fill it with water and shove the transducer in.  This way you never have to worry about screwing up the Goop job by getting bubbles in it (a common problem), or having the Goop eventually fail (a less common, but not unheard of problem), and your transducer is portable and can go from yak to yak.

You want to use a two-part slow cure epoxy-based adhesive. West Marine (and probably tons of other places) sell this stuff called Marine Goop. It is in a silver/blue tube and costs about $6. In my experience, it works better than the epoxy that Humminbird supplies with their transducers.
I have gooped the transducer into the hull of a kayak 4 times and never had any problems (expect when I used the Humminbird stuff and didn't wait long enough before transporting and it came unglued). Otherwise, I'm 4 for 4 with zero problems. Heck, I just gooped in a really really funky old Apelco transducer and it works great! Just make sure to find a flat spot that isn't angled out to the side, etc. And rough-up the area immediately around the mounting surface so the goop sticks.

I guess I'm the only guy using silicone?  I haven't used goop but from what I understand it's messy to work with.

The siliconed pool noodle worked pretty good but I got tired of filling it with water...  even though it was a tight fit eventually the water would evaporate or leak out.

So I just filled the pool noodle with silicone and shoved the tranducer in and put a rock over it to weight it down while drying.

Be sure to sand and then clean the area with alcohol first.  THe silicone will stick well, but will peel up if you need it to.

I goop'd my pool noodle (wow, that sounds dirty)...  Works great.  I've heard others have used vaseline instead.

just use Vaseline it works great spread  a 1/4 in on the bottom of the transducer and press it down even
take to the water and try it out  :smt001

You might need some penicillin for that ...

It doesn't get knocked around by other stuff in your hull?  Seems like it might get pried loose.

Also seems like it could get messy with your other goods getting vaseline all over them.

Very interesting, would have never thought of using that although that's not saying much because I'd have never thought about the goop'd noodle either.

I believe the vaseline is being used in the noodle instead of water.. :smt002

That thought crossed my mind but there was no mention of it and Duane was so matter-of-fact that I thought maybe, just maybe.  The insane part has to come from somewhere. :smt002

here's what you want to do you want to get a pool noodle(make sure your transducer will fit) , some marine goop, a large can of Vaseline,.
cut the noodle about 5 inches tall make sure its a good straight cut, mount it to a smooth area in your hull with marine goop and let it set..after it is set you need to do a little cooking... boil some water and set your bottle of Vaseline in it until it liquefies the pour some into the noodle then push your transducer in and pour a little more in to cover the transducer...then take another piece of the noodle about 1 to 2 inches long and cut it so you can push it into the swimnoodle to cover the transducer.....then let it solidify that is how i have mounted mine and it works like a dream.....how ever you decide good luck and i hope this may help you......this method allows you too safely remove your transducer if you should need to without damaging it

marine goop works great    it works by evaporation not chemical reaction

chemical reaction with some two part epoxies causes a lot oh heat which is bad for hull    evaporation cures longer but no heat to warp hull possible   pool noodle is great  Hobie sell a small foam piece that fits lowrance transducer   Windtoys have them in stock, along with a complete install kit for fish finders    they have lots of parts
