Has anyone used the powerbait eel? They come in 10" and 12" and look like they could make a ling angry but I haven't heard anyone talk about them.

I went to Sportsmans warehouse for fish trap type swimbaits but they only had up to 5". They have bigger swim baits like castaics) but I don't want to use a 20 dollar bait in the kelp and rocks. Where can I get 8-12" swim baits that I can put a leadhead in myself?

I was reading in ronnie kovacs book that he used 10" eels and caught vermillions. said they coughed up baby eels on the deck.

he said they get hit at the head by the big rockfish.

I have some, but they are really striper baits I believe, never tried 'em. not much different from a 10" bass worm.

or a 10" sluggo.

you can get 8" Kelly Kraft (KK on the tail) swimbaits at bayside marine in SC and those are excellent big swimbaits.

Fisherman's warehouse sells 7" fishtrapps.

elsewhere you can usually find 8" to 11" grubs.

I liked the 8" powerbait grubs on a 6 to 8 oz head this year.

Nope.... I haven't actually tried them, but I've been thinking about it not just for rockfish, but for bay stripers too.  My suggestion with using such long baits is to add some kind of stinger hook set-up to get those short biters.

Boneyard makes 11" grubs in many colors.  Do an online search to order in mail or buy at the Outdoor Pro Shop in Rohnert Park ($2.99 ea).  It is at the end of the Rohnert Park Express way northbound off ramp (hwy 101) on the way to the coast.

I haven't used them too much. CHUB uses them and does very well on the rockfish although no lings with it yet.

I've tried really huge worms and they get bit like crazy, but usually at the tail.  They only last me a few drops before they are just a nub.  Same with the larger swimbaits.  Like others have mentioned a stinger setup would probably work great, (although I imagine it would snag in the kelp and grass more often).

If you want a big ling, use a big ling as bait... yep, that's right, I'm advocating using a legal 24-inch lingcod as bait to catch a larger ling...

You think I'm crazy?

Check dis out!!!

Papa Bill, can you make us a big lingcod swimbait?

mickfish,

Wacky rigging is a great idea, but how do you get enough weight on em to get down into Lingville?  Nails in the ends?

I have some big (9") storm swimbaits now. Should I put them on a leader a foot or two behind a 2 or 3 oz ball? I wouldn't think they would make it to the right spot without some extra lead when fishing 100' of water. They are pre-rigged so I can't use leadheads.

That video: Lings are eating machines!   It's trying to digest that enormous meal(they must dissolve the bones) and it still wanted whatever hooked it!
Eels: just for fun, one day I caught some fish on some black foam weather-stripping at Stillwater South, but a bare hook might have worked that day too.

I have been working on some longer larger baits. I tested some at Elk without much success but I think I was in the no fish zone.

Not sure I could pour a 24" lingcod lure though. I have some bigger swimbaits though, there is a chance I will be selling some online next year.

is there a way to make them fatter?  so that you could use a 5 inch swimbait on a 4-6 oz leadhead without splitting the swimbait so easily?

this is something the Kelly Kraft (KK) 7" swimbaits have. a thick midsection.

the thin body is the weakpoint of the big hammers, but they probably say that is what gives them the action.

what I think you really need eugene is a 4oz head on a 5/0 hook instead of an 8/0 hook.
