When I posted the hookup I said it was my first hali try, and damn I almost scored first time out, but almost doesn't count.

Short version, OTW 0700, Off the water at 1330. FAC all day, hooked a keeper but lost it.

Only one takedown all day, hooked it, and got it in the net, even had the net lifted out of the water and then the thing goes bananas , flips out of the net, dances accross my lap and splashes on to better things. luckily for my flesh it left the hooks in the net. Looked about 26", definetly more than 22".

Did try to make bait for awhile but only ended up with one perch that was too big for bait and too small for a taco.  So I drifted around with popsicles all day.

And of course I had company, the pelican almost got my glasses, I pulled them out of my pocket and went to put them on and it almost came into the yak thinkin it was food.

Dredge is still working.

Need a bigger net.

Nice report, Dale.  Too bad about the lost hali, but you got an adrenalin rush out of it anyway!

Great pics and captions.   :smt001

Thanks for the write up. I've lost 'em right there from the net, too, its just part of what keeps us comin' back for more.

If all we did was catch big fat keepers on every trip it would start to get boring!

...but maybe that kind of boring wouldn't be so bad...

Nice work, you'll get him next time!

Also, I don't know if there is such thing as a walleye perch that is too big for halibut bait. Pin him on next time and you might get surprised. One of my best halibut ever came on a 10" smelt at Berkeley Pier! About two years ago it was a slow day of fishing so I pinned that big 'ol smelt on half joking about "big bait = big fish". About 30 minutes later I was bendo with a 34" hali.
