Rolled up to the Bean around 7 Sunday morning to find Don (Backindayak) and Joe (Bloodbath) already there, ready to go.  Soon after, Cafecraig shows up.
Launched into mellow seas with hardly a breeze to speak of.  Craig paddled off to check on his lucky drops while the rest of us headed straight out to deeper waters.
Having gleaned info from Jmairey's Saturday report, I had tied on a silver/black megabait and proceeded to slowly cruise around, looking for bait balls.  Found a nice one, and dropped down, almost immediately hooking up with a decent brown.  Repeated the process again and again, with similar results.
Then one time after drifting off the bait, I swear I hook a fish, but it now feels like I've snagged bottom.  I paddle back over the spot, let out some slack, and wait a second.  Sure enough, there is a fish on the line!  Give the reel a few cranks, and POP!  No fish.  Immediately I drop back down, clank the iron on the bottom a few times, fish back on.  Again, a few cranks on the reel, then POP, no fish.  ARG!  Drop back down, clank clank, fish on.  This time I rear back and set the hook hard, reel up a bit, and set the hook some more.  Theres no escaping this time, and after a nice fight, a 23.5" cabbie is on the clip.
Stuck around long enough to see a heartbreaker ling (huge!) slip through Joe's fingers (I'll let him elaborate on that one), then left the crew to paddle back in.  I had plenty of fish:  not a limit, but more than I usually keep for myself.

Sorry, not the most exciting picture, but its the only one I took.

Saw you guys out there on the way to Franklin one the QofH. Wish I was out there with you guys and not on a cattle boat. Had 23 rookies onboard and I had to play second deckhand while fishing. Still was able to get a bunch of nice rockfish and a 27" ling who ate a small gopher I got. Three of the 15 lings that got brought up were munching on gophers. Not just hitchhiking, but hooked. Mine wrapped its whole mouth around the poor gopher and got the hook set. The gopher just came up for the ride and was released unharmed :smt003

That's why I always tell them it's my first time deep sea fishing on a motor boat. If you hold the reel upside down its guaranteed no one will bother you.
