Juvenile giant sea bass.  Probably not something you want to be showing off after fishing in a rental boat out of Capitola.

F#$%K.
Whats the allowable take for BSB b4 they do an emergency closure? And he posted the pics F%#@K!!!!
Even if its C&R, I still think its Illegal to keep it out of the water to photograph it, with his fingers in the gills like that.

LOL, allowable take.....there's been a moratorium on BSB for years.  In San Diego the public would lynch you if looked at one cross eyed. Its a rare catch for this far north, my guess would be pure ignorance of the fisherman and even moreso on capitola boat and bait for throwing that up on their website.

Good find John....send the link to DFG to see if they can ID it for us?   :smt001

I doubt they'd use it to shut down the season....nice huge fine and deservedly so. I'd be willing to bet that if this guy kept it the total for the year would be 1.

PS....guy is sporting a bronco's hat, I'm calling caltip myself.  :smt002

Yeah, I actually mentioned this exact photo once before. It is not a good idea to post pictures of illegal and undersize fish on your business' website. But, hey, you gotta drum up business somehow, right?

Actually, seeing that picture was helpful in identifying what they look like when they're small...and many casual fishermen wouldn't make the right call on that one. Still, we would all be happier seeing him back in the water unharmed. Too bad. Releasing fish is cool.

Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

If you can't ID it C&R it.

I couldn't have said that better myself.   :smt001

Seriously, how many blackish/purple rockfishy-type fish with big spots do we have in this area that can reach that size?
Any, besides black sea bass? Did the guy think it was a huuu-ge black rockfish, bigger than anyone has ever seen, ever?
Sadly, he probably did, or just thought of it as a Bigfish fish. They're pretty common if your'e a Realman Fishingstud.

Ok, that was kinda harsh. I hope he released it & it survived, & he's actually a good guy.

BUT....

I've never even seen a juvenile BSB before in the wild, & I knew what it was right off.
Mickfish is totally right.

That's Sherrif Larry,  a very, very experienced local.  If that is the fish I am thinking of, he is/was quite aware it being a BSB, and Ed from Cap B & B helped him to unhook the fish.  It was released completely unharmed, but they wanted to document the catch, it being so unusual.  I ran the picture on the weekly Sentinel report, i think it was last year.  I seem to remember the fish being bigger than that, thought it was a 50-pounder, but that could just be my faulty memory, or perhaps this is a different fish, I will ask Ed.

In the olden days, the bay was full of BSB, many going to the hundreds of pounds.  Sadly, the BSB story is one we can lay on overfishing.

Someone else pretty much summed it up but - yeah - that's Sheriff Larry, he knew exactly what it was, and he released it (that's why it was taken while still on a boat - doesn't qualify as "landing").  It was a beautiful fish - the photo doesn't properly capture the color.
