Yeah, I'll wait to call it on Friday. I've got to pet sit 5 dogs, 4 cats, & a giant pig over the weekend in addition to having an oak tree bucked in the yard, so I'll have lots to do if the swell is up :smt044.

Like you guys I had to agree to get some work around the house done on Sunday, but I'll be there on Saturday morning ready for my first launch at the Bean! See you then!  :smt006

Hello folks,

Is Bean Hollow newbie friendly? I'd like to know because I was offered a carpool
already but want to make sure I'm not over my head here. What type of gears
fishing wise do I need to bring?

Thanks for the feedback

That's a tough one to answer because it all depends...

imo as long as the swell and wind isn't too bad it's a piece of cake, but sometimes if the tide is low there are dumping waves hitting the steep beach.  And sometimes there are breakers outside the beach break...  and there's rocks on both sides...

The safe and sane answer is probably "no" but plenty of times it's a piece of cake.

HMB would probably be more newbie friendly, it's a protected launch.

Looks like we'll have two NCKA groups out on the San Mateo coast this weekend. Anyone up for a friendly sporting challenge?

Team Bean vs The Moonies? Biggest Ling wins?

Hello folks,

Is Bean Hollow newbie friendly?

In a word, no.
However, we were all Bean newbies at one time. The first time I fished Bean there were 18 of us on the water!
I would definitely recommend a comfort level with timing surf launches & landings. There have been plenty of wipeouts at Bean. Know how to handle yourself & your boat in steep strong shorebreak. Wear a wetsuit & carry safety stuff.
As far as tackle, the standard lures, etc for rockfish but figure on a decent drift speed. I usually use 2 to 4 oz jigs and swimbaits.

Is the Bean newbie friendly?  It depends on the newbie.  If you've been surfing or have done beach launches as a diver then it's not as scary at all.  If you're a newbie follow the examples set by the veterans and you should be fine.  Sean does make a good point, if you make a mistake the Bean will make you pay.  However, if you have stowed your gear then all you'll do is get wet.  If you do have to bail make sure you jump out on the ocean side so your yak doesn't smack you.

You have nothing to lose by parking on the shore and checking out the waves.  If it's too rough for your skill level then head over to HMB or Pigeon Point.  Both launches are a short drive and have decent fishing.  You do have to paddle a ways to get to the fishing spots though.  Oh yeah, stay away from Mavericks unless you like getting tossed around like a cork.

Last year there were a number of days when the Bean was like a pond because the waves were broken up by the rocks at the mouth.  The weather forecast this weekend is for light winds and small swells and it doesn't get much better than that.  Hobie guys...think twice about bringing your fins.

Tackle wise, any rockfish gear that you have confidence in will work.  Good luck...
My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.
