A leisurely trip to HMB yesterday. M'Lady and M'self, Fishin Jay and Theresa, Shicken and 3 non-fishers paddled out of HMB harbor at ~11.15am. Actually I guess Theresa was technically a non-fisher but she did sterling work as the official photographer.

Thanks be to Shicken for putting us on to the spot. I got a respectable blue and a monster (18") black, both on a shrimp fly. I missed quite a few bites and twice hooked into something large that got off; an 8" scampi came back up without it's tails. I was once again out-fished by my wife who got an 18" cab. She got it on a gitzit (thanks again Adam). I'll let Jay and Marv tell you their stories. I'll put up some of our pics tonight but I'm sure FJ's camera has better pics on it.

We only fished for ~90 minutes and the bite was fairly consistent without being wide open.

In the absence of a tournament is there any interest in an extended NCKA gathering at HMB this year? An unofficial derby? There' plenty of room in that parking lot for post-derby tailgating.........

Nice report NB. I would be down for an NCKA-centric derby at HMB---I still haven't fished there via yak.

Great post Northern Boy. I guess I should ask my wife also if she wants to start
kayak fishing too. So I can do the whole weekend thing like you guys. She only lets me go either a Sat. or a Sun. Congrats M'Lady on the cab.

Oh no!? One report, just one report without any pictures, and the Abking punishment starts!! my name is Phil.....

In a bid to redeem myself, here are a few. Tho' I am sure Theresa and Jay (Rob!!) have some better ones.

The flotilla.

I couldn't get Shicken in that last shot, he was motoring.

It was good to fish w/ yalls.  We should do it again, maybe do it with live bait if its still available.

The fishing was decent, plenty of bites on that reef.  I managed to hook up a decent sized blue rf, kelp greenling, and a black and yellow rf.  Lots of stripped and stolen baits.  Probably would have caught more fish if I used a stinger hook.

that's the worst filleting I've ever seen. I could do better with one hand and blindfolded.

hmmm, the rumors of juicing are still in the air.  Lings, stripers, huge black rockfish...

is an unsteady hand a symptom of juicing?  If so the fillets are exhibit number 1 :smt003  We need a doping test but not for steriods or the clear.  I suspect pro-cure anchovy or sardine oil being mainlined :smt005

Yeah me too. I'm also partial to the cover of "The Model" on, errrrr, the green one, but I thought that wouldn't be an appropriate picture.

Yeah they're pretty poor. I found the cab (and the ling) pretty hard to fillet compared to rockfish or halibut. Also in my defence I popped (what looked to me like) the roe sac and the right hand one was contaminated with it, so I lopped off that section. Still, I need some cab-cutting practise.

It's all natural, I swear.

Wow that was harsh J. I have seen some worse fillet jobs but not many. I am partial to Whole Cab. Just gill, gut & rinse. I like to score the meat on both sides and then wok fry or poach. No waste, no fuss, no smelly carcus in the trash (I prefer to save the carcus for crab or garden) It makes the best whole fried fish in my humble opinion. The skin is really crispy and has a good texture. It also makes for some of the best chippino when poached in lots of liquid (water + wine) add any other seafood goodies of a mild nature.

My dad is english (so is my mom for that matter) and has always given me a hard time about everything, his excuse is it the (north) english way. Knowing that NB is english I thought I'd try to show some english style hospitality as taught to me by my ancestors.

Of course it's possible that it is just a family thing and not a national thing, but I prefer to think it is the latter.

So make that a DULL spoon!  :smt002
