Bill, one thing that is interesting to me is a list of all the species that each
fisherman has caught.

This would be an alternate form of friendly competition and a possible
source of motivation and fun.

There could be two categories, proven and alleged.

I once caught a roosterfish from the shore at punta conejo in baja. But I don't have any pictures. So that would be "alleged".  :smt003

That picture mooch has of the greenling is pretty good proof, (btw, I really like that picture for some reason, it's my favorite elk photo).
I'm really excited about catching a greenling now. They look cool.

Also, once you have the data, there's a lot you can do with it that is fun
and interesting.

The potluck is good, but besides largest of a local species there is also a lot of room for ongoing friendly competition with things
like species variety.

Just an idea.

I really like this idea.   But then again I'm a bit of fish geek.  In fact, I often fish for new species to add to my list rather than just the biggest fish.

Anyway, as resident fish geek, I'll volunteer to help identify and validate fish identifications.

I too got a greenling (f) at Elk.  It is now my favorite fish.  I think it is the near golden glow of her fins that makes Mooch's picture so alluring.

it does seem like trying new fishing techniques (sometimes accidental) and lures gets you new species.

several years back I got back from a trip to mexico and figured there must be fish up here too (duh). But I knew nobody that fished,  and there was no ncka to learn from.

in pure ignorance, we trolled a deep diving jointed rebel, blue and silver, off santa cruz, in a zodiac. after lots of slow motoring, caught nothing.
with hind-sight that is not a surprise, but check this:
we sped up to darn near way too fast and suddenly a fish was on. It was a barracuda! I have since learned this is pretty darn rare around here, but not unknown. again, no pictures. I don't think that thing hit the lure
until we sped up to planing speed,  :smt005.  no pictures, it came off
coming into the boat (no net, no gaff, etc).

This is an atlantic barracuda I caught in the keys last summer
(off a kayak).

I would catch these in our boatslip (they are called pinfish)  then feed them to barracuda, mangrove snapper, tarpon, etc.

That pinfish is too perfect  :smt007
The male greenling is nice, (looking to score extra points here from BSteves), but the green and gold of the female is near perfection to my eye.
If it wasn't the case that I would end up just being a bait fish, I would like to be reincarnated as a female greenling.  Sometimes I am such a girl...... :smt061
Pat...next thing you know I'll be sporting a pink wet suit........NOT...... :smt004

I have had an idea in my head for a while for something very simular. I just have not had time to lay down any code. I am hopping to get it started in the very near future. If anyone wants to help let me know, I am thinking of writing in Ruby on Rails for all the geeks out there.  :smt002

Pinfish was my goto bait growing up on the gulf coast, I caught many many big fish with those guys.

So those greenlings are colored different by sex? cool! are any of the other fish we catch like that? I am not aware of any.

Those pinfish are great. They fully attack tiny hooks with left over porkchop, shrimp, whatever.  too bad they are only 3 oz,  :smt005

The top mangrove snapper in this picture is real fat because it has a pinfish (might even be the one in the photo) in its stomach. It's pink because it has been dead longer (I think).

Bill, I have to admit I do know what Ruby is, but you are on your own! Looking forward to whatever you come up with. With a background  including some surfing, skateboarding, coding, and a non-native upbringing we have a fair bit in common. hopefully I will get the chance to introduce myself in person at some point.  :smt006

I caught 2 "common" greenlings this morning.  That's a total of 3  greenlings of my entire life.
I didn't target them, it just happened.

great pic! looks like you are about to take a bite!

those greenlings are the coolest, no doubt. One thing I like about Vic Dunaway's books (sport fish of florida, sport fish of the pacific) is that
you get the impression he has eaten one of every species. sometimes
he dissembles like with the GWS.  you can read his comment for
yourself.

I mean you can't walk into andronicos and get greenling can you? And who knows if some strange combination of fish is not the elixer of youth
or something.

So the first greenling I catch, I'm eating just to see what it tastes like,
maybe the others I will release just cause they look cool.

Speaking of eating, Wow, a halibut has a lot of meat on it doesn't it. I had no idea. I had to drop a brownside dorsal filet on a neighbor. No way we were going to finish that thing.

Bill, I got emoticon issues here after the upgrade. Note that we internet oldtimers don't need those sissy things anyway, ascii is fine!  :-) :-/ :-( ;-| ,well it's hard to make the fishing one I guess...

Ok I think I got the emoticons fixed up. Thanks for catching that.   :smt069

I have kept one greenling and I did not like it very much, it was very greasy.

Tried the Greenling for the first time yesterday.  Greenlings are said to be the ocean Trout.
So I cooked it just like I would a trout.  The skin peeled off nicely, BUT the bone
structure is not like a trout but a  Lingcod.  There are a set of bones running
horizontal and vertical.  Bones everywhere.  A lot of meat was wasted because of the bones.

As for the taste, I didn't notice anything spectacular.  Your not missing anything.

If I get a big one, I might try again.
